Could her Little Monsters have driven up votes?
"Wow, over 70 million votes on #AmericanIdol tonight," Tweeted executive producer Nigel Lythgoe after Wednesday's episode, in which Lady Gaga mentored the contestants.
It's not a record -- the David Cook- David Archuleta finale received more than 97 million votes, for example ? but Lythgoe was impressed with the tally.
Gaga worked with remaining contestants Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery on songs by Leiber and Stoller, who wrote most of Elvis Presley's most memorable hits, like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock." They also wrote "Stand By Me" (With Ben E. King) and "Smokey Joe's Cafe."
Said Lythgoe, "I personally feel Haley is the most improved contestant."
Ryan Seacrest reminded the audience that no one is safe, as Chris Daughtry was the fourth contestant voted off in season 5 (but he went on to become one of the most successful Idol alums of all time).
Season six winner Jordin Sparks performed.
Judge Steven Tyler will premiere his new music video, ?(It) Feels So Good," Thursday.
