Food Glossary

Food shopping can be confusing, but learning the language doesn?t have to be an exercise in frustration. This glossary identifies marketing jargon and lists common terms you?ll find on everyday food labels so you can get to the bottom of what you?re buying and eating. Go to: Food Glossary
(outside link not endorsed by the Purple Porch Co-op, but we encourage good resources)

The New Online System

Still new to the system?? Go Here.

Words of Wisdom - Please read?

  1. When you place an order PLEASE do go through the checkout process.? Right now its a painless 3-step process - just make sure you get to the end and that you get an email confirmation.
  2. Be aware that there may be more than one producer selling the same product.? So, if you desire potatoes from a certain producer - be sure to look at the producer associated with that product.?
  3. Constructive criticism is a must - please send it to Greg.
New feature: Reviews? You can submit reviews about your favorite products.? Help spread the word about the great food of Purple Porch producers. Just click on the review link under the respective product and follow the prompts.? All reviews filter through Greg.? So, this is not the democratic part of our Co-op.? But this should really help the new folks see what is yummy!

New feature: Gift Certificates
Much easier now.? Just go to: https://www.localfoodmarketplace.com/purpleporch/GiftCerts.aspx (also found under "Our Products" on the main site. Just fill in the information prompts and add it to your order.

Volunteer Opportunities

Saturday Pickup Times
On Saturday, June 4 we will begin having an additional pickup time (with a separate ordering time).? We need volunteers to help staff Saturdays.

Please sign up for Cashier and Greeter.?

Please email Pat Rowan or Greg Koehler and let them know which Saturdays you can help with.? Please consider two-hour shifts: 8:00-10:00 am and 10:00-noon.

Music at the Co-op
Do we have any Co-op member that are musicians?? I know the answer is YES.? Join us at the Co-op either Wednesdays or Saturdays and provide some much needed local music.? And by all means use it as an opportunity to promote talents.

"The ArtBeat Task Force"
?We need a group of people to head up the organization for our booth at ArtBeat this year (August 27).? Last year we had a successful first run making watermelon slushees and iced coffees. The goals this year are to spread the word about the Co-op, make a little money for the Co-op and have some fun doing it!? Contact Greg if you're interested!

?Produce some YouTube videos
...about the Co-op and/or our amazing food producers.? Creatively help spread the word about a sustainable food system in Michiana.

A Visit from the Police

Don't panic! We invited them!

Greg Koehler (Manager) and? Pat Rowan (Board Director) met with two representatives of the South Bend Police Department.? We have not had any crime problems in the year we have been at LangLab.? The Board was interested in doing what we can to be proactive against crime at the Co-op.?

The Police Officers gave us some good advice about how to handle our money at checkout.? We were happy to hear that overall, we're doing a good job.? We have arranged for extra patrols during Co-op hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays - again, in the name of being proactive.

Co-op Needs

While Spring cleaning this year, please consider donating the following items to the Co-op
  • Weed trimmer (preferably electric)
  • A lockable metal box (with key, of course)
  • Native wildflowers and/or edible landscaping.
Sorry, we're not 501c3, so your donation is not tax deductible at this time. But it is MUCH appreciated.

Double It!

Starting with our second anniversary celebration (June 1), we're having a new promotion called "Double It" - as in - Double our membership.? We've been growing for 2 years, but we know there are many more future members out there.? We're at about 225 members now, so the goal is 450 members by the end of the year.

To help get us there, we've got a couple of incentives for current members.

  1. Bring a friend to the Co-op.? Friend buys something and YOU get a free loaf of bread or dozen eggs on your next order.
  2. If that friend joins the Co-op, you get a $10 gift certificate to use for any Purple Porch Co-op order.?
  3. Then your friend can do the same...
  4. No limit!? But just two restrictions, to be fair, your friend must buy something when they visit and s/he cannot be a member of your household.
This is easy - If every current member does this once, we're there!? Promo starts June 1.
