House delays vote on debt limit, spending cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republican leaders have abruptly delayed a vote on a bill extending the government's debt limit and cutting federal spending.

House Speaker John Boehner's spokesman, Michael Steel, said it was "a sensible assumption" that Boehner was still trying to round up the needed votes. Steel said the vote would still happen Thursday night.

The House was nearing the end of its debate on the legislation when Republicans suddenly shifted gears. They instead moved to a bill renaming a post office in Peoria, Ill.

GOP leaders have been laboring to line up the 216 votes the debt bill would need to pass the House, and they have encountered opposition from some conservatives. There are 240 Republicans in the House.

Few if any Democrats are expected to support the measure.

Why You Shouldn't Argue in a Negotiation [Negotiation]

Why You Shouldn't Argue in a NegotiationWhen you negotiate, you might think it's a good idea to argue why you think your offer is fair. While in reality you may be right, you also may be hurting your chances. Here's why.

Art Markman, writing for Psychology Today, points to a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that studied the role of persuasive arguments in negotiations:

if you are interested in buying a house, the seller might ask for $350,000, arguing that the house was newly renovated and is near good schools. [The study] argued that when people hear an argument in favor of the initial offer, they think of counter-arguments. These counterarguments may actually push the counteroffer further away from the initial offer than it would have been had there been no persuasive argument. Someone looking at a house might find all the areas that still need renovation and think about other houses even closer to the better schools in town and give a low offer on the house.

The study also found that the initial offer was important because it served as an anchor for the duration of the negotiation. You want to be the person to make that initial offer, but the important thing to remember is to resist the desire to justify your decision. If you simply let the other person consider your price, their thoughts won't be flooded with counter-arguments and you'll be more likely to settle on a fair price.

Business Management & The Liking Principle ? Episode #73 | CEO ...

by Richard Wilson on July 29, 2011

The following video is borrowed from our BusinessTraining.com platform and was originally recorded for our business management training program.? I have researched the psychology of influence and persuasion for the past several years and the ?liking? principle is an often overlooked concept in business. ?In this video, I explain how you can use the psychological principle of liking to be a better business manager.

Video Transcript/Summary: The strategies and tips provided within this video module include:

  1. Liking is the psychological principle that if you are a business manager and you are trying to get a project accomplished, the people around you will be more influenced by you if they see you as similar to themselves, if they like you, and if they think you are friendly.
  2. This is something that is very often overlooked by business managers.?
  3. One way to employ this psychological principle is to find common ground and personal similarities with the people that you work with and use those similarities to connect with your employees and superiors on a personal level.
  4. Another way to use liking is to mentor someone on your team.? This will help you connect with your staff as a business manager and develop that person?s skills while becoming more friendly with your team.
  5. Lastly, you can try to see any problems, issues or conflicts from the perspective of the people you are managing.?

I have found that by taking concrete steps to employ the liking principle, I have fostered a better relationship with my team and created a more enjoyable workplace.? I highly recommend that you look for ways to use the liking principle in your own business.?

Thanks for joining us, and I will see you again soon,

McCullough Goes Outside the Western Hemisphere for a Gem of a Book ...

Obviously, I read a lot of business books, but I also enjoy other types as well.? I read novels from Stuart Woods, Catherine Coulter, Harlen Cohen, John Sanford, and I really miss Robert B. Parker, who passed away last year.

I like non-fiction also.? A great best-seller that is now available is by David McCullough, The Greater Journey:? Americans in Paris (Simon and Schuster, 2011).?? McCullough is the authorized biographer for Harry Truman, and that book was cryptically called Truman.? He also wrote 1776, featuring great stories of our country?s founders.? His books have obviously focused on events in the Western Hemisphere, so this one is a departure from what we are familiar with from his writing.

The Greater Journey is about Americans who traveled to Paris between 1830 and the early 1900?s.? Obviously, they went by sea, and the book chronicles the fascination that several Americans had with the Parisian arts, dining, and other aspects of its culture.? Among the characters in the book?are famous names such as Samuel Morse, Charles Sumner, George Healy, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.?

One thing to keep in perspective as you read this book is that comparing America to Paris in this time period is like comparing apples and oranges.? As a nation, America was only 54-125 years old.? We were an infant compared to the much longer heritage and history that Paris offered these people.??Of course, almost every aspect of culture and?civilization that these Americans experienced was better in Paris.? That is only because Paris had much?more time to develop?them.

I particularly enjoyed these Americans? fascination with Parisian food, art, and culture.? Of course, most of these people that McCullough chronicles in the book had the money and resources to go first-class.?

And,?you could still do that today if you went to Paris.? If you don?t want to do that, this book is a great way to experience the culture from a previous era.? Remember that many of the items that McCullough includes are still open and active in Paris today ? the most famous being the Louvre museum.

What do you think?? Let?s talk about it!

Amy Winehouse Funeral

Amy Winehouse Funeral

The friends and family of singer Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday at age 27, gathered for her funeral in London on Tuesday morning -- three days after her death, which is in keeping with Jewish tradition.

The ceremony was held at Edgewarebury Cemetery in the Golders Green area of London. And according to Radar Online, Winehouse's parents, Janis and Mitch, her brother Alex and her boyfriend Reg Traviss were among the 150 people in attendance. Also there were pals Kelly Osbourne -- who wore her hair in Winehouse's signature beehive style -- and Mark Ronson, producer of Winehouse's 2006 album Back in Black (and the brother of Samantha Ronson). Winehouse's ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil -- who is currently serving 32 months in jail on a violent crimes charge -- was not allowed out of prison for the funeral.

TMZ reports that Mitch Winehouse delivered a touching eulogy, sharing stories from Amy's childhood and telling his daughter, "Goodnight, my angel. Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much." The 45-minute ceremony, which included prayers in both Hebrew and English, ended with Carole King's "So Far Away," an Amy favorite that she once performed as a duet with her father. "Mitch encouraged everyone to sing to it and they did," a rep for Winehouse told People. "People sang."

Following the ceremony, mourners headed to the Golders Green crematorium, where Winehouse was to be cremated. "I think because her grandmother was cremated at the same place, so it was a family tradition to be cremated," the singer's rep told People. Some of Winehouse's ashes reportedly will be scattered with those of her grandmother Cynthia, who died of lung cancer five years ago.

The funeral may help bring peace to Winehouse's loved ones, but they don't have closure yet. An autopsy on Monday was supposed to determine how Winehouse died, but according to the Associated Press, the results were inconclusive. London police have announced that they are awaiting the results of "further toxicology tests," which will take two to four weeks.

Winehouse's death is widely assumed to be related to her very public struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, but the police have presented no evidence to support that theory. Although U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror reported that Winehouse's friends and family say she died of alcohol and ecstasy use, an anonymous police source told People that Winehouse was not surrounded by paraphernalia or signs of drugs when she passed away.

For his part, Mitch Winehouse believes his daughter was happy when she died. "Amy was the greatest daughter, family member and friend you could ever have. I will talk a lot about her fantastic recovery," Mitch said in a statement to E!'s Mark Malkin. "Recently Amy found love with Reg. He helped her with her problems and Amy was looking forward to their future together. She was the happiest she has been for years."

What's more, Mitch insists that Amy was on the road to kicking her addictions. "3 years ago, Amy conquered her drug dependency, the doctors said it was impossible but she really did it. She was trying hard to deal with her drinking and had just completed 3 weeks of abstinence," he reveals. "She said, 'Dad I've had enough, I can't stand the look on your and the family's faces anymore.'"

As for the night Amy died, Mitch had this to say: "She was not depressed. She saw Janis and Reg on Friday and was in good spirits. That night, she was in her room, playing drums and singing. As it was late, her security guard said to keep it quiet and she did. He heard her walking around for a while and when he went to check on her in the morning he thought she was asleep. He went back a few hours later, that was when he realized she was not breathing and called for help. But knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better."

In the statement, Mitch also reveals plans to start the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which he calls "something to help the things she loved -- children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse. In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two year waiting list for help. With the help of Keith Vaz MP, we are trying to change that."

The singer-songwriter's death has also left questions about her unreleased recordings. Though her musical influence was tremendous, Winehouse only released two studio albums before she passed away. MTV News reports that she had been working on a reported follow-up to 2006's Back in Black for the past two years. It's unknown how many finished songs she actually recorded -- or, indeed, if she recorded any.

Music lovers are now holding their collective breath, hoping that there's another Amy Winehouse album still to come. For now, the world is revisiting her familiar songs: Back in Black is currently No. 1 on the iTunes charts.

When you have stage 4 colon cancer and you are ... - Anal Info

When you have stage 4 colon cancer and you are undergoing chemo is it hard or can you work?

moonshine annie
Stage 4 is usually the last stages of cancer. Once it spreads to other organs of the body, it usually is only a matter of time. Be good to them, their time is limited.

Panda
It depends entirely on the patient, age, overall health, and response to treatment. Some are able to get back on their feet rapidly and others will languish . . there is no way of knowing. And, despite some of the grim statements here . . stage IV cancer refers to treatment and is no longer considered a ?death sentence? .. your inlaw is in treatment for a stage IV disease. Which means that it will be more difficult to treat and take longer than a stage 1 .. that?s all.

Hopefully they will be able to regain control of the disease with treatment. Cancer that has spread to the liver can be treated . . much will depend on the individual patient and their response though.

Your inlaw should be seen at a comprehensive cancer center as most of these facilities are research or university hospitals that offer the newest cancer treatments. You can find a list at the National Cancer Institute:

http://cancercenters.cancer.gov/cancer_centers/cancer-centers-list.html

It might help also to join a few support groups to see what others are doing for the latest treatment of this type of cancer:

ACOR: Colorectal Cancer Discussion List

Colon Cancer Alliance

http://www.ccalliance.org/

Best to you. Remember there is always hope.

deiltaknight
Working through any stage of cancer is a matter of choice. You don?t have to. Stage 4 automatically qualifies you for SSDI benefits.
Yes, stage 4 is treatable and many people live a good quality of life for YEARS. Don?t write your relative off.
Most stage 4 colon cancer is treated with an oral chemo called xeloda and is very tolerable.

Tell anyone who says they are going to die, ?are you God?? or ?why, do you see an expiration dated stamped on my forehead? or just ?GFY, so are you?!!!!

Lola
There are 5 stages of cancer, with each representing a more serious degree of disease progression. The stage has nothing to do with treatment, it is the progression of the disease. The earlier cancer is caught the better the chances are of survival. Once cancer has spread to surrounding organs cure is pretty much ruled out. Most treatments at this point are aimed at slowing down the progression to buy the person more time. There is no treatment for liver cancer that I?m aware of that would do anything more than slow the cancer down. Once cancer reaches the liver life span is lowered to 6-9 months. I?m sorry but your in law doesn?t have much time left. Unless there is a miracle or someone finds the cure between now and then.

Spreedog
?Panda? is the top answerer in this category, but I have to
disagree with her statement that ?stage IV disease . . . means that it will be more difficult to treat and take longer than a stage 1 .. that?s all.? Colon cancer metastatic to the liver is not likely to be cured in any medical center.

Chemotherapy is usually given to buy some time ? often in terms of extra months rather than many years. The chemotherapy given for colon carcinoma is usually better tolerated than more aggressive regimens used for other types of cancer.

I have had some patients tolerate 5FU based chemo regimens well enough to work if they wanted to ? usually they did not. Often it is the advancing malignancy in the liver that leads to weakness and weight loss plus lack of energy and decreased activity level.

Added note re: Lola?s answer (which is otherwise fine) ? I?ve never heard a stage ?five? cancer. Stage four means the cancer has spread to distant areas ? such as the liver in this case. There is no stage beyond stage four.
And stage does refer to the malignant disease ? not to the treatment ? though the treatment is tailored to the stage of the disease. These are small points.

What you want to know is that the treatment is usually not very rough. If your family member is in good shape, he may have some good quality time left. If there is truly significant liver involvement, many years of survival would be unusual.

Survival does vary with the level of involvement. The National Cancer Institute indicates that people with three or fewer lesions in the liver can do better.for longer periods ? perhaps 25% survival at five years compared to less than 5% survival at five years for more extensive liver involvement

Correcting myself ? Lola is correct. If you count stage 0, there are five stages ? - but stage four is the last stage.

Also ? of course no doctor is God and no one can say when someone will die. We can only provide information about the usual outcomes based on previous people. I did not use the word ?terminal? in my cancer specialty medicine practice. All of us are terminal. There are always people who do better than average.

typical not me
It is sometimes a matter of choice if one continues to work and it sometimes depends on how the individual reacts to the chemo etc. Everyone is different. He should not feel pressured to work just because some people have

Student Loan in Developed Countries ... - Business And Finance

Business And Finance ? Several developed countries on average have sufficient financing system is integrated so as to provide opportunities of its citizens who are economically disadvantaged to continue their education into college. Education financing system with a Student Loan or a loan to learn is one commonly used in developed countries.

Some countries like the United Kingdom, New Zealand, America, Australia, Canada, Norway, Ireland, India, Germany, Sweden and Denmark are some examples of countries that are still actively running the student loan program. If we see from the chart above, the penetration rate of students applying to college with funding through a student loan, then Canada is the highest. Developing countries such as Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia are also active in providing student loans to students.

Most of the student loan on top of the financing system is regulated by the Ministry or the Ministry of Education in each country. This clearly means that the supply of government funds to take an active role in educating its people. For more details about filing systems, processes and systems to get student loan repayment, please click on the links above.

Then how in Indonesia? Currently the government has not given space to run this kind of system in Indonesia. The new Looks like the Foundation is the only institution that provides the best service for the student / students who wish to make a Student Loan at this time.

Indonesian society is still very difficult to get a student loan because of the limited number of institutions providing this service. It?s nothing, because students and students in Indonesia used to be fed for free with a scholarship by the donor agencies either from abroad or from the government and private institutions in the country. Mass media, like magazines, newspapers and the internet was not enlightening in this regard.

Student loan financing is not the best way to continue her education because after completion of studies students are required to repay the funds borrowed during the lecture. This has often caused problems. In some developed countries like New Zealand, some students who have completed education with student loan financing system precisely and then leave the country to work abroad to pay his student loan repayments.

Book Review: The Force of Obedience: The Political Economy of ...

Matthew Partridge reviews a book on the corruption and corporatism at work in Tunisia, and how the rhetoric of ?modernisation? was used in some cases to justify policies that increased the power of the state.

The Force of Obedience: The Political Economy of Repression in Tunisia. B?atrice Hibou. Polity. June 2011.

Find this book: Google Books Amazon LSE Library

Three years ago, a U.S. State Department official sent a dispiriting cable back to Washington D.C. entitled ?Corruption in Tunisia: What?s Yours is Mine?. It began ?according to Transparency International?s annual survey and Embassy contacts? observations, corruption in Tunisia is getting worse. Whether it is cash, services, land, property, or yes, even your yacht, President Ben Ali?s family is rumoured to covet it and reportedly gets what it wants?. However, according to B?atrice Hibou?s The Force of Obedience: The Political Economy of Repression in Tunisia, this institutionalised theft was not just a consequence of Ali?s dictatorship, but was one of the many means by which he used economic controls to ensure political dominance.

In particular, Hibou argues that this ?corruption? did not just extend to the bribes and expropriation that other students of Tunisian politics have focused on, but also encompassed a wide-ranging series of discretionary interventions that enabled the regime to set up what she describes as a ?policing state?. Under this system the rule of law was replaced with ?a whole series of micro-decisions which foster the meshing of logics characteristic of Tunisian modes of government? and ?make the control and individual surveillance of everyone possible?.

Roughly a fifth of The Force of Obedience is spent investigating banking, where this mixture of corporatism, paternalism and corruption was most apparent. For instance, debtor-friendly laws prevented the collection of bad debts and discouraged domestic investment. As a consequence, access to credit was determined by political connections as much as management competence, while financial institutions themselves depended on deposits from the myriad of state firms to survive. Hibou illustrates this process by citing the case of BIAT (Banque Internationale Arabe de Tunisie), which was severely punished after its founder criticized the economic policies of Ali?s regime.

Even the more traditional security mechanisms made extensive use of economic networks. Although Tunisia was heavily policed, the heavily regulated taxi sector was required to spy on passengers, as much to intimidate the population and spread ?the idea that everything is being listened to, including the most anodyne discussions?, as to gather intelligence. Similarly, the punishment of dissidents focused on making them unemployable by confiscating their qualifications and putting them under de-facto house arrest. The overall aim of these measures was to ?set a person apart, ostracize him and exclude him, subject him to trials and tribulations, and increase the sense of vanity associated with political communication?.

Although economic problems and pressure from international institutions would force Ben Ali to repeatedly pledge to institute economic reforms, Hibou argued that most of the controls persisted. Chapters 8 and 9 focus on how the changes were either left incomplete or deliberately subverted.? One tactic was to ?restructure? the enterprises immediately before their movement to the private sector by lumbering them with uneconomic contracts and obligations, leading to financial instability which forced them to continue their dependence on the Tunisian state. In other cases, their ownership was simply transferred to another public body with only a nominal amount of capital moved to the private sector.

Indeed, the rhetoric of ?modernisation? was used in some cases to justify policies that increased the power of the state. From the middle of the 1990s the government gave large fiscal incentives to firms who were willing to commission research from private consultancies as to how they could adopt new processes and technologies. Although Hibou scrupulously acknowledges that the efforts initially boosted productivity, the business community quickly became disillusioned at the ?proliferation of interventions? where ?studies are carried out because studies need to be carried out; enterprises find their hand forced to enter the program, to publicize it, to take part in delegations abroad and to vaunt the merits of Tunisia?.

Of course, Hibou has a preference for jargon and her style can be ponderous, though this may be due to the translation. The role that France played in enabling Ali could have been developed further, especially given that the Tunisian intelligence service were able to burglarise Hibou?s offices. Instead of simply rewriting the introduction for the updated edition (the original was written in 2004/5 and published in 2006), it might have been worthwhile to include an additional chapter on why the system of repression finally collapsed.

However, these shortcomings do not prevent The Force of Obedience becoming a powerful reminder that, to paraphrase President Obama?s recent speech, the future of the Arab world will depend on the interactions between street vendors and those in power.

Dr Matthew Partridge has recently completed a PhD in Economic History at the London School of Economics.

John W. Whitehead: Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs

"Linda never stopped taking pictures. She was serious about it. I must confess that I was a little envious of her book of sun pictures -- pictures made by experimenting with an early nineteenth century printing process that involves manipulating negatives and natural light on rag paper. There are two sun pictures of a horse named Shadow. Shadow leaping in the snow on a dark winter day. Shadow jumping. I've never seen anything like them. They are mysterious and beautiful." -- Annie Leibowitz, Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs

Linda McCartney, whose life was cut short in 1998, was an active and admired photographer for over three decades. In that short time, she amassed an amazing portfolio with a wide range of subject matter. Obviously comfortable around her subjects, Linda's spontaneity and lack of pretension easily produced some of the finest celebrity photos of our time.

In conjunction with the release of Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs (Taschem, 2011), a handful of Linda's images are now on exhibit at the Bonni Benrubi Gallery through July 29, 2011, in New York City. Both the images in the exhibit and the book were selected from over 200,000 images and negatives in close collaboration with Paul McCartney and their four children.

Linda McCartney was born in New York City and studied art history at the University of Arizona. While living in Tucson, she also studied photography with Hazel Archer, a well-known instructor from the legendary Black Mountain College.

After returning home to New York, Linda began her career as a photographer in 1966 shooting portraits of rock musicians. Although, as daughter Mary McCartney points out in her essay in the book, "her father didn't approve of her photographing 'long hairs.'" However, by 1968, her portrait of Eric Clapton was on the cover of Rolling Stone and she made history as the first woman photographer to achieve this milestone.

Linda captured that era's most important musicians: Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and many others including her future husband. In 1967, while working in London, she photographed The Beatles at the album launch for Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and met band member Paul McCartney. They eventually wed in 1969, raised a family and performed in their band Wings together.

But marrying the famous Beatle did not dampen Linda's appetite for taking photos. From the mid 1960s to 1998, Linda captured her whole life on film: rock and roll portraits, her family, travels, celebrities, animals, and still lives. In fact, some of her best photographs emphasize the "ordinary" life -- if you can call it that -- of Paul McCartney at play with his family.

The following are a collection of photographs by Linda McCartney on display at the Bonni Benrubi Gallery with quotes from some of the contributing authors from the book Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs.

Paul Velvet Jacket, Los Angeles, 1968

"She was the easiest of photographers to be photographed by and the relaxation of her subjects that she achieved is clearly visible in her work. I was always impressed by her impeccable timing. When you least expected it the shutter would click and she had the shot. Her art took on new dimensions when she settled down to raise her family. Her love of nature, children and animals meant she could find fascinating images all around her." -- Paul McCartney

The Beatles at Brian Epstein's House, London, 1967

"I was nervous to photograph The Beatles because... I was nervous! I think also because there were a lot of other photographers there. I didn't feel artistically satisfied [by the pictures] except for the one of John and Paul with their thumbs up, because I felt like that was interaction, and that was the photo that nobody else got. No one knew I was a photographer. When I married Paul, to [the fans] I was an American divorcee, I think they called me... 'Who is this American divorcee? Why isn't he marrying his girlfriend he had been going with for years?' You know, we didn't prepare them." -- Linda McCartney

The Beatles, Abbey Road, London, 1969

"So I took my portfolio over to Hilly House, their office, and Brian Epstein's assistant said 'Fine, you can leave your portfolio and we'll get back to you.' So after about two or three days he got back to me saying 'Oh yes, Brian loved your photographs, and yes you may photograph The Beatles. They're releasing an album called Sergeant Pepper and they are doing a press thing at Brian's house and you can be one of the photographers. And, by the way, Brian loved your photo of Brian Jones and one of the ones of Keith Moon.' I said, he can have them! So that's how that happened, too, I got to photograph The Beatles, so my dreams came true." -- Linda McCartney

Willem de Kooning, Long Island, NY, 1968

"When I think about how and when one releases the shutter, it's for a multitude of reasons. Every photographer is searching for a definition that he or she doesn't really know how to explain until after the fact. When we are holding the print in our hand, then we know what it was we were really looking for and whether or not we found it. The real thing that makes a photographer is more than just a technical skill, more than turning on the radio. It has to do with the force of inner intention. I have always called this a visual signature. It has to do with the kind of visual overtone that emanates from the work of certain photographers who have managed to gain access into this level of performance within the medium." -- Linda McCartney

Jimi Hendrix, Central Park, New York, 1967

"Jimi was very sensitive and very very insecure. He really didn't reckon himself and he used to burn the flag, and play the guitar with his teeth, and after a while he told me how much he hated doing that. But I said, 'Look, you are the most inventive guitar player I've ever seen,' I mean, off stage, he would just play all the time, brilliant... [I said] 'Stop doing that stuff!' He went 'Oh no, they won't come and see me if I don't do it.' They would've come and seen him more I think if he'd stopped doing that rubbish. But he was very insecure, as are a lot of artists. Jimi was just so sweet. It's so sad." -- Linda McCartney

Paul, Stella and James, Scotland, 1982

"Some of my earliest memories of Mum are of her holding a camera, always a simple one; point and click was her thing. She never had an entourage of assistants, just her and her companion, the camera. When I was a child, she captured moments that could easily have passed unnoticed, yet she caught precious images, some that sum up our family, some that were one-off moments (for instance, James balancing bread sticks in a restaurant or Mary and me with buckets on our heads). Her humour is there, her sympathy, her love of nature and life. Every image is a reflection of her way of seeing life and how she viewed every day with fresh eyes. Her lens was her way of expressing herself, the real Linda." -- Stella McCartney

McCartney Album Cover, Scotland, 1970

"She was a rule breaker but with the kindest of souls. She was the punk that never sought to upset people. The result was a charming quirkiness that endeared her to many: the odd socks, self-cut hair, the lava lamps, the way she hung cut glass from the windows to create rainbows all over the walls." -- Mary McCartney

Self Portrait in Francis Bacon's Studio, London, 1997

"Linda's fundamentally reportorial style had had a greater affinity with the photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson than, say, the directorial idiom of an Irving Penn. But, as she began to draw her subjects from within her growing family and immediate milieu some of her photographs are uncannily redolent of those of the great Victorians, Julia Margaret Cameron and Lady Hawarden. She experimented with old techniques that expanded the range of textures and palettes open to her -- sun prints and platinum toning -- and mastered large-format plate cameras in order to make intriguingly atmospheric still-lifes (Teapot, Sussex, 1996); the movingly portentous self-portrait in Francis Bacon's studio was made on a 10 x 8 inch negative."--Martin Harrison

Brian Jones and Mick Jagger, New York, 1966

"When the Rolling Stones were trying to get publicity for themselves, when they were touring over here, they sent Town & Country an invitation which I opened and put in my drawer and thought, 'Well, I'll go to that one!' Someone came up to me and said 'Well, we just don't have room for all the photographers and all the journalists so you will be the photographer.' I thought 'Oh my God, I'm not really a photographer, does she know?' But I bluffed my way, I mean I didn't bluff it, I figured it's her choice. So, I got on the boat and had a lot of film with me and really enjoyed taking pictures. I think my only worry was that the pictures wouldn't turn out, in truth....I was a bit shy and introverted, but looking out through the lens I saw, and I forgot myself and I could actually see life. This enthusiasm came out of me, and it did, photography changed my life in that way, so it wasn't just the Rolling Stones, it was the whole thing."--Linda McCartney

Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, New York City, 1967

"I had no idea I was photographing future icons, but, I loved [Jim Morrison's] music, I loved him as a person, I loved all The Doors actually--Ray and Robbie and John, in fact The Doors were never popular really until after Jim's death. I mean, you look at the movie on The Doors, it was nothing like that, you know they had massive crowds and 'Jim, Jim...' None of that. I mean they could barely get arrested, in fact he did get arrested, poor guy." -- Linda McCartney

Mirror, Self Portrait, 1992

"Linda's one-ness with her photography was most evident at the end of her life, when she must have suspected that she was going to leave the world. The photographs she made then are simple, pure. She was using photography to try to hold on to existence. As we all do. Photography offers us the assurance that we will not be forgotten. Photography didn't fail Linda. Her pictures are proof of a life well lived. As a woman and as an artist." -- Annie Leibowitz

Obama condemns 'terrorist acts' in India (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is condemning deadly attacks in India's busy financial capital of Mumbai, calling them "deplorable terrorist acts."

The president, who visited Mumbai last fall, says the attacks were "outrageous" and his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and those who lost loved ones. He said in a statement the U.S. government continues to monitor the situation, including the safety and security of U.S. citizens, and will support India's efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.

At least 17 people were killed in the near-simultaneous bomb blasts that rocked three busy neighborhoods during the evening rush hour Wednesday in Mumbai ? the same city besieged by militants nearly three years ago.

Obama said he's seen the strength and resilience of India's people firsthand, and they will overcome the bombing.

Comment: Majlis fiddles with democracy as society burns thumbnail

The country is broke and the price of living is going up every day while the standard of living is going down.

The price of a can of tuna is now 20 percent higher than it was a few months ago. A valhoa mas kiba, part of our staple food since time immemorial, is now beyond the common person?s reach. A bottle of water was Rf10 just a month ago; it is Rf14 this month.

Electricity bills, water bills, gas bills, are all hugely more expensive than any other country in the neighbourhood. A majority of people are living hand to mouth.

A vast chunk of the country?s youth population are either addicted to drugs or recovering from it. They are unemployable, and out on the streets, committing crimes big and small or looking in vain for another chance at life.

The standards of teaching in public schools are abysmal, and private schools remain an unaffordable dream for the majority. To say that public schools are free is to lie through one?s teeth; for people are paying through their noses for private tuition ? a parallel education system that exists in a parallel universe. It is the elephant in every classroom that nobody in authority wants to talk about ? the government cannot regulate it without first acknowledging the massive failings in the education system; and a majority of the teachers do not want to talk about it because it is the cash cow that supplements their meagre incomes.

Children from other islands are having to migrate to Male?, boarding with host families or packed into small rooms the rent of which they share; paid by parents who break their backs working on farms or on fishing boats, just so their children can get an education. The housing crisis and social problems related to overcrowding increase.

The health system is too weak to cope with any unexpected outbreaks of disease; Maldivian doctors are still the minority and are offered less pay and benefits than their expatriate counterparts; and infant and adult mortality rates are needlessly high. It was all too clear to see with the recent dengue fever outbreak.

Unemployment rates are sky-high while trafficked Bangladeshis are bought and sold by the planeload. They live in their scores of thousands working and living on building sites; existing in an alternate realm of worker drones, buzzing away in the background, building, serving, cooking, cleaning, maintaining; jobs that Maldivians consider themselves too good to be doing.

Their presence is acknowledged only when the buzzing gets annoying; when their levels of ?civilisation? are deemed not to match our allegedly impeccable manners and faultless social graces; and when foreign governments chastise the Maldives for its cruelty for putting a price on the heads of human beings and selling them to the highest bidder.

Longstanding?traditions?of?peace,?friendliness?and?cleanliness have?disappeared; replaced with avarice and aspirations of grandeur achieved by?any means possible. Basic civility, let alone friendliness, is conspicuous in?its absence: the smile; the queue; the exchange of niceties; respect for the?elderly; the weak and the vulnerable; the knowledge of belonging together?? what are they? People push, shove and climb over each other to get to an?undefined ?there? faster than anyone else ? literally and metaphorically.

It is all there to see in the pantomime that the Majlis is enacting, fiddling with?democracy as society burns. What is the purpose of these theatrics? Are we?supposed to be impressed with his behaviour? Are we supposed to admire this?display of ignorance as ?people power?? Is this to be seen as standing up (or?sitting down) for the rule of law? Are we supposed to applaud these MPs for?their ?valour? in forcing a needless confrontation between legislative and military?power?

Are we supposed to cheer in adulation or tremble in fear when one MP who?was only recently bought by one party now shouts at the party he had just left?

Are we to ignore the fact that if such members did indeed have an ideology,?or a set of deeply held political beliefs or values they would not be so easily?bought and sold?

Are we supposed to laugh with them and chuckle at the smirks on their faces?when they are being led away by the army? Are we supposed to let our children?hear the filth that is sprouting from their mouths into our airwaves on daytime?TV? Are we to appreciate as media savvy the manner in which, like a bunch of?schoolboy bullies in a playground, they are taking photographs and videos of?each other being bundled away by men in army fatigues?

Are we supposed to be appreciate as role models of feminism the female?voices heard screeching like cockatoos at the spectacle of MPs being carried?away like chimpanzees by zoo handlers? What exactly is being celebrated?here? What state will our nation be in the coming years if these are our highest?representatives, if this is the pinnacle of success that our children as future?leaders can aspire to?

Whatever destruction that three decades of dictatorship could not unleash on?our society with its ruinous policies, society is wreaking upon itself. We did not?have a transition to democracy, we just changed one supreme power to which?we subjugate ourselves for another: Mammon for Maumoon.

The Majlis should be where the people turn to for solutions to their problems. It?is, however, both the representation of all our problems as well as their nucleus?and their source.

What a sham.
