SILVIS, Illinois (AFP) ? American David Toms said Thursday he will miss next week's British Open because of a hip injury that has also forced him to withdraw from this week's $4.5 million US PGA John Deere Classic.
"Had to WD from John Deere with a hip injury. Won't be able to play British Open either. Not a great day," Toms said in a message posted on Twitter.
Toms, who won his first PGA title at the 1997 John Deere event, was one-over par after nine holes following a 10th-tee start when he pulled out.
Toms, who won a 13th career PGA title at Colonial in May, hopes to be ready for the last major of the year, August's PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, where Toms won the 2001 PGA Championship for his only major title.
The 44-year-old American ranks fifth on the US PGA money list. In addition to his victory at Colonial, Toms was the runner-up at the Players Championship, dropping a playoff to South Korean K.J. Choi.
Toms's place in the British Open, which will be held at Royal St George's from July 14-17, will be taken by England's Simon Dyson.
Also withdrawing from the John Deere Classic was American Robert Garrigus, who shared third at last month's US Open. He pulled out after going five-over through eight holes with a back injury.
Garrigus is still slated to be an injury replacement entrant at next week's British Open at England's Royal St. George's.
