International (MI) won the James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award. The U.S. Defense Security Service (DSS) annually presents the award for demonstrated excellence in industrial security.

Members of the MI Security team received the award from DSS during the National
Classification Management Society?s Annual Seminar in New Orleans, La. DSS has
responsibility for more than 13,000 cleared contractor facilities, from which
less than one percent are considered for Cogswell recognition. This is the third
time MEADS has won this prestigious award.
MI President David Berganini said, ?As we work to complete system integration
for MEADS, the security awareness of our tri-national development team underscores
our commitment to fielding this capable air and missile defense system. Only
by protecting vital information now can we ensure MEADS advanced capabilities
fully protect soldiers and citizens in the years ahead.?
MI is the prime contractor for MEADS, a ground-mobile air and missile defense system that incorporates the hit-to-kill Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) Missile, 360-degree radars, netted and distributed battle management and high-firepower launchers. The system combines superior battlefield protection with new flexibility to protect forces and critical assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft.
MI?s 2011 Cogswell Award also honors seven consecutive years of Superior security ratings. A Superior rating is reserved for contractors who have consistently and fully implemented the requirements of the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM) effectively, resulting in a superior security posture compared with other contractors of similar size and complexity. The facility must have documented procedures that heighten the security awareness of the contractor employees and that foster a spirit of cooperation within the security community. This rating requires a sustained high level of management support for the security program and the absence of any serious security issues.
MI Security Manager Ron Walls said, ?The credit for the Cogswell Award belongs
to our security-aware employees and their commitment to security practices.
We also benefit from strong security support at Lockheed Martin Missiles and
Fire Control, and from our European partner companies LFK and MBDA.?
MI first won a Cogswell Award in 2000 and, after introducing and managing a complex industrial network to share classified information among three nations, earned its second Cogswell in 2007.
MEADS improves capability to defend troops and critical assets through improvements
in range, interoperability, mobility and full 360-degree defense capability
against the evolving air and missile threats. MEADS defends up to 8 times the
coverage area with far fewer system assets than existing systems and significantly
reduces the number of required operators and equipment.
MEADS International, a multinational joint venture headquartered in Orlando, Fla., is the prime contractor for the MEADS system. Major subcontractors and joint venture partners are MBDA in Italy, LFK in Germany and Lockheed Martin in the United States.
