Subterranean Press releases some of the ballsiest and most enthralling sci-fi and horror stories on the market today, featuring speculative fiction luminaries like Joe Hill, Joe R. Lansdale, Jay Lake, Caitlin R. Kiernan, and Terry Dowling. So I admit I was surprised by how few of the stories in?Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy 2 captured my attention.
Short-story collections are difficult to judge by their very nature, encompassing a variety of styles, subjects, and authors. No collection can please every reader with every story. With this in mind, I was still somewhat underwhelmed by this collection.
That?s not to say there weren?t some standout tales worthy of recognition. Kelley Armstrong?s ?Chivalrous? was a devastatingly effective look at long-standing rivalries and the age-old story of the sins of the father. David Prill?s ?A Pulp Called Joe? offered a twist on hometown loyalty and values with a town defined by its paper mills in more ways than one. And the well-established western/horror genre gets a new classic in Norman Partridge?s ?Vampire Lake.?
But despite my opinions, I suspect other readers may find a bit more to enjoy within the pages of?Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy 2 than I did.
