Smoke House and Angel City Dinner

Where can you get award winning barbeque with an incredible beer selection in Downtown LA? ?Spring Street Smoke House & BBQ, that?s where!

We are back with another amazing beer pairing dinner, and we can definitely say that the 3rd time?s the charm. ?In this case, the 1st and 2nd were also quite charming, but this time the food was paired with Downtown?s own Angel City Brewery. ?Angel City Brewery hasn?t officially opened its doors to the public yet, but it?s already created awesome beers. ?LA get ready, because you are in for a serious treat.

Now onto the beer pairing dinner. ?Tonight?s dinner would be a 5 course meal complete with 5 different beer pairings for each. ?Without further ado, I present the menu.

First Course

Kettle chips marinated in Eureka Wit and vinegar for over 24 hours

Beer Pairing: Eureka Wit, Angel City?s flagship beer with wheat, oats, and?coriander?and hopped with Nelson, Citra, and Fuggle

Notes: ?Nothing quite beats a good helping of Kettle Chips. ?These chips were expertly cooked and could easily be eaten with any barbeque or picnic food. ?The Wit beer was a great pairing, but honestly with the summer heat in full swing this Eureka Wit was just plain refreshing. ?I wish I had a bottle right now.

Second Course

Irish beer & cheddar soup made with Angel City?s avocado beer and topped with fresh croutons

Beer Pairing: Angel City avocado beer. A truly unique beer made with over 125 pounds of Avocado and spiced with?garlic, crushed red pepper, and limes

Notes: ?This course was my favorite. ?I know it?s hot outside, but this soup really hit the spot. ?It was delicious! Jason, recipe please! ?The avocado beer completely took me by surprise. ?Normally a novelty beer like this is just that, a novelty, but Angel City?s beer transcends the novelty and hits a perfect?balance?of cream, spice, and crispness. ?Based off a Kolsch, this beer really shines. ?I could see this easily being one of the most popular beers in ACB?s arsenal, but I know it?s an experimental seasonal only, so if you are interested in trying it, hurry. ?It will not last.

Third & Fourth Course

Braised and smoked short rib duo. ?It was too hard to choose just one type of rib so smokehouse chose two. ?The braised ribs were cooked in Angel City?s East Coast ?Biggie? IPA and the smoked ribs were covered in a beer reduction teriyaki sauce made from Angel City?s West Coast ?Tupac? IPA. ? This came served with marinated potatoes and corn.

Beer Pairing: East Coast IPA hopped with German noble hops & West Coast IPA accented with citra.

Notes: There was a little flavor competition going on in this round. ?I really thought the pairing of East Coast IPA and Braised Ribs was?excellent. ?The mellowness of the IPA really brought out the creamy chocolaty-ness of the rib fat. ?It reminded me holiday pot roast. ?The smoked ribs were also great with the tangy bite of beer teriyaki. ?This seemed to be the crowd favorite.

Fifth Course ? Dessert

Morrocan Dessert Cigars. ?These fried fillo dough cigars were stuffed with apple,?cinnamon, and nuts and were coated with an alt beer reduction syrup.

Beer Pairing: ?Angel City alt beer. ?The head brewer, Dieter, is no stranger to making classic German style beer. ?Having worked at Gordon Biersch earlier in his career?preparing?these classic styles are old hat. ?This alt, Happy ALTernative, was rich and malty and complimented the sweetness of the desert very nicely.

Notes: ?A truly tasty dessert paired with a deliciously malty German underdog. ?I love alt beers, but we don?t get to see many of them made commercially. ?Hopefully Angel City will own this beer and bring it to the people of LA.

Wrap Up

Another great pairing dinner brought to you by the fine folks at Spring Street Smoke House. ?Honestly, if you haven?t been to one of these dinners you should really try to make it. ?There are few places in LA that deliver proper pairing dinners. ?Spring Street is one of them. ?Keep your eye out for their next dinner in December that will incorporate holiday beers.

Special thanks to the Angel City Brewery crew that made it out to meet everyone. ?Dieter, Ashley, and Ian, keep up the great work! ?Thank you also to our illustrious host Jason Kruger, who has done a bang up job organizing these Spring Street events. ?Chef Erik Punzalan, your food was delicious! Also, thanks to the amazing Smoke House staff ? you guys rock. ?Roy Chavoya (Beers in Paradise), it?s always a pleasure seeing you, buddy. ?Lisa Nativa (Nonna?s Kitchenette), it was great meeting you.

Until next time!

Cheers,

Kip

P.S. I?m serious. Go try that avocado beer!

Atari and Microsoft launch browser-based arcade

Atari and Microsoft launch browser-based arcade

Pong, Asteroids, Yar's Revenge, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Missile Command - if you visited an arcade in the 80s you'll feel right at home on Atari Arcade.

If you've got a hankering to play some 'reimagined' arcade classics this weekend, we've got some good news for you: Atari and Microsoft have teamed up to port some old arcade hits to HTML5 for free play in any modern browser, no coins required.

Part of Atari's 40th anniversary celebrations and an attempt to convince hordes of third-party browser users that the upcoming Internet Explorer 10 release is a good time to return to the Microsoft fold, Atari Arcade takes a selection of classic titles and gives them a spit-and-polish work over with new graphics and sound before porting them to JavaScript and HTML5.

The result: shiny new versions of games including Missile Command, Lunar Lander, Pong, Centipede and Combat which operate in any web modern web browser.

The technology behind the games is a JavaScript library developed specifically for HTML5 gaming called CreateJS. As well as underpinning Atari's retro-remake efforts, the library is to be opened to third party developers - which could be just what browser-based gaming sites like Newgrounds need to make the shift away from Adobe's Flash Player.

In case you're wondering what the catch might be, there is one slight one: the gaming service is supported by advertising, which pops up before each game is launched. If you're particularly anti-advertising, there is an alternative: use Internet Explorer to play the games and, thanks to Atari's partnership with Microsoft on the project, the adverts disappear.

"Atari and Microsoft have had a long and successful history on Xbox Live and in the digital space," claimed Jim Wilson, Atari's chief executive, of the site launch. "The reimagined Atari Arcade expands this partnership in a new direction, in keeping with our current digital strategy, making it easier than ever for gamers around the world to access our renowned franchises, through the power and flexibility of an HTML5 based platform."

All the games can be accessed by hitting up the Atari Arcade website in any HTML5-capable browser, or if you need a little more convincing here's company founder Nolan Bushnell shilling for Microsoft:

(AP) ? A man convicted of participating in the repeated group sexual assault of an 11-year-old Texas girl was sentenced Thursday to 99 years in prison ? but he wasn't in court to face his fate.

As the verdict and sentence were read in the Southeast Texas courtroom, authorities were searching for Eric McGowen, who fled a day earlier after the victim tearfully testified about the attacks. Prosecutors say the girl was sexually assaulted on at least five occasions from mid-September through early December of 2010 by 20 men and boys from her town, Cleveland, which is about 45 miles northeast of Houston.

McGowen was free on bail at the time he disappeared, so authorities say a security detail was not required to watch or follow him. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office has declined to release any details about the search for McGowen, other than to say that he is believed to be armed and dangerous.

His disappearance was the latest twist in a case that has divided the town of Cleveland, both because of the horrific allegations and suggestions from some residents that the girl was partly responsible because of her appearance. Police began investigating after one of the girl's classmates told a teacher he saw video of her being sexually assaulted in an abandoned trailer.

Prosecutors' case against McGowen included a videotaped confession and testimony from nearly a dozen witnesses, including the girl, who is now 13. Defense attorneys did not present any witnesses or evidence.

Jurors were swift in their decisions. They deliberated for just 20 minutes before finding him guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Then, after brief testimony in the punishment phase, they decided his sentence in less than 30 minutes.

Most of the jurors declined to comment afterward. The jury foreman made a brief statement as bailiffs led jurors from the courtroom.

"The state did their job. The evidence was overwhelming," said the foreman, who declined to give his name while being escorted out a back door

Neither the girl nor her family were in the courtroom when the jury's decisions were announced; McGowen's relatives also were not present.

The Associated Press could not reach the girl's mother for comment, but family friend Brenda Myers relayed comments from her. Myers said the girl's mom said that while she was glad the trial was over, she was upset that McGowen was still on the run and was concerned for the safety of the girl and her three other children. Myers runs a youth center in Cleveland and knew the girl before the assaults. The girl was placed in foster care after police began investigating the sexual assaults, but it's unclear where she lives now.

McGowen was the first defendant to stand trial in the case. All six of the juveniles and two of the 14 adults charged have pleaded guilty. McGowen faced a minimum sentence of 25 years prison and a maximum of life.

Prosecutor Joe Warren said he doesn't believe that the jury's conviction and sentence were lessened by McGowen not being in the courtroom.

However, McGowen's defense attorney, Matthew Poston, said his client's decision to flee in the middle of the trial "absolutely affected" the jury's decision to convict. Poston said he didn't know where McGowen is now.

McGowen was present Wednesday when the girl told jurors about an encounter in October 2010 and one the following month in which she said McGowen and several other men and boys took turns sexually assaulting her while recording the encounters on video.

The girl, who testified using a pseudonym, briefly broke down in tears as jurors were shown a few minutes of video of the alleged sexual assault in October 2010.

She described another encounter that November that started in a different Cleveland home and continued at a nearby abandoned trailer. She told jurors that McGowen assaulted her with a beer bottle during that incident.

The case sparked outrage in Cleveland, and early on, some residents suggested the girl was partly responsible because they say she wore makeup, looked older than her age and wasn't properly supervised by her parents, drawing widespread condemnation.

The case also was complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

During closing arguments in the punishment phase, Warren had asked jurors to show no mercy to McGowen and sentence him to life. Testimony covered McGowen's criminal record, including a burglary conviction.

"Don't let him out of prison. Don't let this happen to anybody else. ... Don't let the next child who has a pack of dogs chasing her get raped," he said.

Poston asked the jury to sentence McGowen to the minimum of 25 years, saying this was not a crime committed under the threat of violence. He added that he was not suggesting it was the girl's fault. He said the blame fell on the men and boys who sexually assaulted her.

"I ask you not to throw away his entire life," he said.

Like McGowen, most of the remaining 11 defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child. Trial dates have not been set for any of those defendants.

Asked how McGowen's guilty verdict might affect those cases, Warren told reporters, "They better get their business straight."

4 Responses to the Challenge of Same-Sex Unions by Albert ...

In the world but not of the world? From the very beginning, the church has faced the challenge of responding to external events, trends, ideologies, and controversies. By definition, the church does not get to choose these challenges, but they have been thrust upon Christians by the world. The question always comes down to this: What?now?

That question seems especially urgent in light of the emergence of same-sex unions and marriage in the United States and the world over. How must the church answer this?challenge?

To answer that question, we need to think about the speed of the moral revolution that has pushed this question to the forefront of our culture. In less than a generation, homosexuality has gone from being almost universally condemned to being almost fully normalized in the larger?society.

We are facing a true moral inversion ? a system of moral understandings turned upside down. Where homosexuality was even recently condemned by the society, now it is considered a sin to believe that homosexuality is wrong in any way. A new sexual morality has replaced the old, and those who hold to the old morality are considered morally deficient. The new moral authorities have one central demand for the church: get with the new?program.

This puts the true church, committed to the authority of God?s Word, in a very difficult cultural position. Put simply, we cannot join the larger culture in normalizing homosexuality and restructuring society to match this new morality. Recognizing same-sex unions and legalizing same-sex marriage is central to this?project.

Liberal churches and denominations are joining the project, some more quickly and eagerly than others. The cultural pressure is formidable, and only churches that are truly committed to Scripture will withstand the pressure to accommodate themselves and their message to the new?morality.

What, then, is the true church to?do?

First, we must stand without compromise on the authority of the Bible and the principles of sexual conduct and morality that God has revealed so clearly in His Word. The Bible?s sexual morality is grounded in the creation of humanity in God?s image; we are created as male and female and given the gift of sex within the marriage covenant ? and only within the marriage covenant between one man and one woman for as long they both shall?live.

The easiest way to summarize the Bible?s teaching on sexuality is to begin with God?s blessing of sex only within the marriage covenant between a man and a woman. Then, just remember that sex outside of that covenant relationship, whatever its form or expression, is explicitly forbidden. Christians know that these prohibitions are for our good and that rejecting them is tantamount to a moral rebellion against God Himself. We also know that the Bible forbids all same-sex sexual acts and behaviors. Thus, we know that homosexuality is a sin, that blessing it in any way is also sin, and that normalizing sin cannot lead to human?happiness.

Second, we must realize what is at stake. Marriage is first and foremost a public institution. It has always been so. Throughout history, societies have granted special recognition and privileges to marriage because it is the central organizing institution of human culture. Marriage regulates relationships, sexuality, human reproduction, lineage, kinship, and family structure. But marriage has also performed another crucial function ? it has regulated?morality.

This is why the challenge of samesex unions is so urgent and important. Redefining marriage is never simply about marriage. It leads to the redefinition of reproduction and parenthood, produces a legal revolution with vast consequences, replaces an old social order with something completely new, and forces the adoption of a new morality. This last point is especially important. Marriage teaches morality by its very centrality to the culture. With a new concept of marriage comes a new morality, enforced by incredible social pressure and, eventually, legal?threats.

Third, we must act quickly to teach Christians the truth about marriage and God?s plan for sexuality in all its fullness and beauty. We must develop pastoral approaches that are faithful to Scripture and arm this generation of believers to withstand the cultural pressure and respond in ways that are truly?Christian.

Fourth, and most important, this challenge must drive us to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians must be the first to understand this challenge in light of the gospel. After all, we know spiritual rebellion when we see it, for we ourselves were rebels before God?s grace conquered us. We know what moral confusion means because without the light of God?s Word, we are just as?confused.

There is no rescue from the self-deception of sin except for the salvation that is ours in Jesus Christ. While doing everything else required of us in this challenge, the faithful church must center its energies on the one thing that we know we must do above all else ? preach, teach, and live the gospel of Jesus?Christ.

DIY Wine Rack Tutorial - Home Stories A to Z

Yesterday I shared with you that I had the privilege of appearing on the television show Craft Wars with my good friend Kathleen. We were issued the challenge of making a ?Thanksgiving Wine Rack? in one hour using some of the following materials: pie tins, acorns, silverware, turkey basters, footballs, and craft supplies from the craft closet. Kathleen came up with a?GENIUS?design plan. I am not a math girl, and this baby requires some quick math to pull off. On the show, our original idea was to wrap the wine rack in rope or twine?but from all of the yarn wreaths and jute wrapped decor I have created over the years I just knew there was no way we would have enough time. Our second idea was to cut strips of burlap and twist the strips as we went along to create a ?braided? look. This actually looked kind of cool but again?no time! So the burlap just had to be wrapped around in strips. I have crafted with burlap MANY times before, and I?ve never worked with burlap that frayed so much. This stuff was ridiculous and our wine rack was a big craft fail. But Kathleen?s idea was a fantastic one, so we wanted to recreate it for you just in case you want to try your hand at making your own!

diy wine rack

Instead of pie tins in the list of supplies you will see aluminum flashing. Roof flashing is so much easier to work with than pie tins and will give you a much cleaner end result! We didn?t think you?d mind *wink*.

diy wine rack

In the picture below you can see the supplies we used. For this project you will need:

  • Aluminum Metal flashing (You can find it in the lumber section in Lowes along with other roofing supplies. I think I bought the 10?L x 14?W Amerimax Flashing. It was around $8.50.)
  • Flash mate glue (This will be in the same aisle.)
  • Caulk gun
  • Scissors that will cut through metal. Wire snips will work.
  • Measuring tape
  • 10 Metal clips
  • Electrical tape
  • Hot Glue/ Hot Glue Gun
  • Around 3 spools of twine

Your flashing is currently 14 inches wide and 10 feet long. You want to cut the entire thing in half lengthwise so that you?ll have two 7? wide x 10? long pieces. After you?ve cut your flashing in half, take your tape measure and scissors and cut your flashing into five 30? long pieces. Now put those in a pile and maybe slap a sticky note on them so you don?t forget their size! Then cut three 14? long pieces (pile and sticky note) and then cut two 21? long pieces (slap on a sticky).

Take your FIVE 30 inch long pieces and grab your FlashMate glue. For each 30 inch long strip you will glue the ends together to create a circle. Add a long strip of glue to one end and glue both ends together, 1? deep. Your circle should now be 28? in circumference. Repeat this step until all five circles are complete.

Add two metal clips to the ends to hold while the glue dries.

If you want to reinfornce the metal ends, use electrical tape and wrap around where the ends meet. The glue is sturdy but it takes a long time to dry and we didn?t want any surprises later on with the rack falling apart! Once all of your glue is dry you will have five 28 inch circles.

You are now ready to connect these babies in an Olympic type circle! Grab those five circles and a marker and make a little mark every 7?.?Take three circles and using your metal shears make slits at three of the marks you made. Leave ?? of an inch uncut. Take two circles and make slits at two of the marks you made. (For the two circles, the slits should be at marks that are next to each other, not across from each other). This is complicated and very mathy but look ahead at the picture below Step 6 to get an idea of where you need to cut the slits on your circles.

diy wine rack

Slide the circles together by interlocking the slits you just made in Step 5.

diy wine rack

?

Reinforce all of the slits with electrical tape.

Now you are ready to fill in the circles with some decorative flashing that will make this wine rack look like a geometric wonder! Grab your two 21? pieces, your tape measure, and marker and again make a little mark every 7?.?Take your 21? pieces and bend the flashing in a ?W? shape at each of the marks.

Take your three 14? pieces and bend them each in half.

Place your 14? pieces on top and in the bottom/middle circle. Reinforce with electrical tape.?Place your 21? ?W? pieces in the left and right bottom circles. Reinforce with electrical tape. Do a little dance my friend because you just made a wine rack!! It will feel flimsy. This is on purpose. The wine rack needs to flex to fit all of your wine bottles.

If you have every made a yarn wreath you KNOW how long this will take. Wrap your entire structure with jute twine and hot glue if you dare. You could also wrap it in fabric strips or thick ribbon if you?re not willing to do all of that wrapping.

When you?re done, your wine rack will hold 16 bottles of wine.

Of course we had to redeem ourselves after that awful craft fail, so Kathleen and I made a celebration out of the occasion by throwing our own little wine party!

diy wine rack

I staged the photos at an old barn in our area. I LOVE this old barn! If you remember my family photos from last year, we took them at this location as well.

diy wine rack

A few more gratuitous shots of our hard labor!

diy wine rack

wine rack

Cheers girl! We might not have moved on during our episode of Craft Wars, but Kathleen and I certainly can accomplish some beautiful projects together!

I hope you?ll try your hand at making our wine rack! And if not, I hope you?ll at least stay and enjoy some wine :) .
