Distraught Taylor first Briton to exit boxing

It all ended in tears for lightweight Ross Taylor on Thursday as he became the first Briton to exit the Olympic boxing tournament in a defeat to Italy's Domenico Valentino.

The 21-year-old Scot was unable to find a solution against his vastly more experienced opponent, the 2009 world champion, losing 15-10 in their second round bout.

Taylor, though, was inconsolable after the fight.

"I'm obviously incredibly disappointed after all the hard work to reach here," Taylor said. "I just couldn't deliver the win this evening.

"I have really enjoyed the build-up and I am very grateful for all the support I have received and I will now reflect on what happened."

Taylor, a former British taekwondo champion, has no intention of turning professional yet.

"I intend to fight at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and go one better than I did at the 2010 ones in Delhi and that is to win gold."

Valentino for his part said that he had got a wake up call from his corner men going into the third and final round with just a one point advantage, 8-7.

"The coach said to me you are world number one not the guy in the opposite corner, so go out there and show him that you are," he said.
