Love Your Skin! 2,000,000 New Skin Cancer Patients Annually
The Don?t Fry Day event is an annual event co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Council for Skin Cancer Prevention who also appeals to sun lovers to practice healthy summer basking. ?Don?t Fry Day?, which takes place on Friday, May 27, 2011, encourages awareness about sun safety by following these simple guidelines:
- Wear sun-protective clothing, a hat that shades face, ears and neck, and sunglasses.
- Shun sunburns, purposeful tanning, and tanning beds.
- Enjoy the great weather in the shade.
- Be extra cautious near reflective surfaces like water, snow, and sand.
- Get vitamin D safely through sunscreen free sunshine ? do this in manageable increments so that you don?t fry!

Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States, and it is estimated that there will be ?more than 68,000 new cases of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, and more than?two million new cases of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers in the U.S.? this year (NCSCP).? It doesn?t have to be like this. Skin cancer is preventable, and early detection is easily remedied. Practicing safe and healthy practices when in the sun is key to preventing skin cancer.
Skin Cancer Risk Factors
UV rays are not the only source of skin cancer. Other risk factors are certain chemicals, radiation treatment, heredity, smoking and a weak immune system. Some experts even blame a lack of vitamin D! Also, if you are male and have fair skin, red hair, moles and have a family history of skin cancer, your risk factors are exponentially more than others.? Be proactive and practice sun safety. You wont regret it.
