You can also download it in the form of a PDF document. Again, if you do this, you can print out the document and keep it with you. You can have it faxed right to your home or your office. Sometimes online insurance companies will even mail you the proof you need if you request it.
If you do not get your insurance online, that is all right. Real time companies will give you proof of your car insurance as a matter of course. Generally, you can walk away with it once your policy is finalized. If you lose it, the company you use will almost certainly mail you a replacement.
Now, if you have insurance but no proof of it and you get pulled over or get into an accident, it is not necessarily the end of the world. However, more often than not, the officer there will give you a ticket. The fine will not be quite as high if it would be if you had no insurance at all ? but why risk it?
