Jon Stewart finds the Fox News coverage on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney hard to swallow.
By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor
If the Mitt Romney campaign hoped the leaked video of his ill-considered remarks at a May fundraiser would be a one-night story ? well, it was mistaken. But Fox News came away with as many woes as the candidate when Jon Stewart was done with his ?Daily Show? monologue Wednesday night.
The tape of Romney dismissing those who receive Federal subsidies as being unworthy of his attention was the gift that keeps on giving for Stewart, who rarely misses the chance to point out political ridiculousness when he sees it. The ?entitlement? debate, dismissing 47% of voters as moochers, was right up his ally.
?Entitled to food! Medicine! Roofs!? Stewart said, feigning outrage at those who would dare to hope for such luxuries. ?That?s the Republican candidate for the presidency seemingly characterizing a broad swath of Americans which would include veterans, the elderly, the working poor and much of the middle class as a bunch of freeloaders.?
But Stewart saved much of his venom for Fox News, which he called both the ?Romney campaign headquarters? and an impolite term for a mountain filled with the waste products of a male bovine -- ahem. Examining the ?fair and balanced? spin coming from the network?s ranks, Stewart noted that Fox first tried to dismiss the video because it came from the liberal Mother Jones magazine, via Jimmy Carter?s grandson.
(Warning: The following clip contains some profanity.)
?Oh my God! Your campaign got blown out by Jimmy Carter?s grandson! Oh, the Habitat for Humanity,? Stewart said. ?So word one from (expletive) Mountain is well yeah, he said it, but you only found out about it because of people we don?t like.?
That was only part of the Republican response, of course. The spin took some other turns, with some arguing that Romney was speaking truth, though not artfully, and further indicating it was a strategy that could win him the election.
?Let me sum up the message, if I may,? Stewart said. ?This inartfully stated dirty liberal smear ? is a truthful expression of Mitt Romney?s political philosophy, and it is a winner.?
That wasn?t all. He also noted the folks at Fox ?minimized the video because it was a distraction from the big issues people theoretically care more about and because of when it was taken ? in May of this year.
?May! Oh, that sounds like before June. Who even remembers May?? Stewart said. ?Grandfather, may I sit on your knee and hear you tell tales of what life was like way back in May???
If you followed the news, you know what happens next. A video of Obama talking about the redistribution of wealth was located and played, with all the usual commentary about how damaging it was. Of course, it was taken in 1998. When he was a State Senator from Illinois.
(Warning: The following clip contains some profanity.)
?So recorded videos are a distraction ? here?s one on Obama,? Stewart said.
And then came the big finish.
?The biggest problems with the denizens of (expletive) Mountain is? If they had success they built it. If they failed, the government ruined it for them. If they get a break they deserve it. If you get a break, it?s a handout and an entitlement. It?s a baffling, willfully blind cognitive dissonance.?
Looks like he gave Fox News? Bill O?Reilly some bulletin board material for when the two debate in October.

"I hope you're not too disgusted with me," Dan Gheesling pleaded Wednesday night on "Big Brother 14" as he entreated the jury one last time to hand him the $500,000 prize.
And that about sums up what we were down to on the show's season finale (don't cry, CBS has renewed it for next summer!) -- the crafty, manipulative season-10 winner vs. the slightly more conscientious Danielle Murphree and Ian Terry.
"He's going to leave a man one way or another, " ousted veteran houseguest Mike "Boogie" Malin said of Quack Pack leader Ian, who claimed that Dan gave him his grandfather's gold cross as collateral to ensure that he wouldn't vote Ian off the show.
"Big Brother" welcomed U.S. gymnastics' Fierce Five this season
"There are a lot of things I'm ashamed of," Dan admitted when questioned about lies he had told after swearing on his wife or on the Bible that he was telling the truth. "I had to play a ruthless game. If I could take it back, would I? Yeah ... I was up to my elbows in blood."
Well, not quite, but he did stab a lot of folks in the back, a statement he would be first to agree with.
During the first half of Wednesday night's finale, the field was whittled down to two after Dan won the first part of the final Head of Household competition and Ian won the last two parts. Perhaps figuring that the "probability, statistics and a little bit of heart" that he used to navigate the depths of Big Brother would curry more favor with the jury than Dan's ruthless tactics, Ian sent Danielle packing.
"Big Brother's" big season twist revealed!
No wonder then that Danielle cast her vote for Dan.
But in the end, Ian was $500,000 richer after being named the winner of "Big Brother 14."
"This is easily the best moment of my entire life...Quack-quack is all I've got to say," Ian said in appreciation. Frank Eudy, meanwhile, walked away with the title of America's Favorite Houseguest and $25,000.
Guess a little bit of pluck beats a whole lot of ticking people off every time!

YIDA, South Sudan (AP) ? Tens of thousands of people have already swarmed to a refugee camp in South Sudan and community chiefs expect a new wave to soon begin the trek from Sudan's war-torn Nuba Mountains, setting up what humanitarian workers warn could become a catastrophe.
As many as 15,000 more refugees could stream across the border from Sudan by the end of the year, straining a camp that has been hit by malaria and diarrhea with many people arriving malnourished, said the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR.
"We are already stretched to the breaking point here, and any surge or increase in the population will make it nearly impossible to cope with the situation," UNHCR's Kathryn Mahoney told The Associated Press.
Yida sits near the northern tip of South Sudan's Unity State near the border with Sudan. It is a remote region in one of the world's least developed countries. Recent rains have made roads impassable, and the World Food Program has been forced to drop food from the sky to meet the camps' needs. For the past week, large Ilyushin jets have screamed over the camp, dropping 64 metric tons each day from a height of 200 meters (yards). The cheers of refugees - and some aid workers - watching the spectacle accompany each drop.
The population of Yida rose since February from 17,000 to 65,000 by September. From mid-June through mid-July, around 1,000 new arrivals came each day, along with a rash of death and disease that one Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) official described as "five weeks of hell."
According to MSF, around two people per every 10,000 in the camp were dying each day, double what the organization considers the emergency threshold. Around 25 percent of those admitted to the MSF hospital in Yida were dying. Many were acutely malnourished, and the rains brought malaria and diarrhea.
"In June, July it was so (bad)," recalled MSF Emergency Coordinator Foura Sassou Madi.
Three refugee camps in neighboring Upper Nile state, South Sudan, recently declared an outbreak of Hepatitis E which has already killed 16 people. Doctors are now watching closely for any signs of it in Yida. Madi says they are also watching for any signs of cholera.
An influx of refugees is also expected at the four camps in Upper Nile State's Maban county. The refugees there have fled a similar war in Sudan's Blue Nile. There are now more than 110,000 refugees in the Maban camps.
"Aside perhaps from the Syrian crisis there is no other that matches the compelling realities that we have seen since April, May," said UNHCR's Africa Director George Okoth-Obbo at a recent briefing in South Sudan's capital, Juba.
UNHCR says it needs $183 million to manage the humanitarian needs at the camps. So far only around 40 percent has been delivered. According to Okoth-Obbo, they need at least $20 million more by the end of the year just to maintain their current operations.

Russia's Dmitri?Medvedev called for the release of three Pussy Riot members sentenced to two years in prison. Is he trying to distance himself from the decreasingly popular president?
By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / September 13, 2012
EnlargeDmitri Medvedev, Russia's prime minister and former president, has departed from the official script ? as he sometimes dramatically does ? to call for the release of three Pussy Riot women who were sentenced last month to two years in a penal colony for committing sacrilege in Moscow's premier Orthodox cathedral.

The women have been in prison since March, and their appeal hearing is set to begin in two weeks. Mr. Medvedev called for the women to be given suspended sentences.
"Imprisonment is a very severe, even frightening responsibility," Medvedev told a meeting of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, of which he is nominal leader.
"This well-known group of girls have been in prison quite a long time already, and that is a very serious punishment for everything they did, regardless of the sentence?. Prolonging their prison confinement seems unproductive in this case," he added.
Medvedev's comments came just a few days after President Vladimir Putin compared Pussy Riot performances with "witches' sabbaths" and mused over how obscene their name sounds in English in an interview with the Kremlin-run RT network. Otherwise, Mr. Putin insisted he had nothing to do with the case.
On Tuesday Russian state TV aired a "documentary" film entitled "Provocateurs. Part 2" which claimed the brief "punk prayer" performed by Pussy Riot in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior last February was part of an international conspiracy financed by renegade Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who currently lives in London.
Some experts say Medvedev, who has not shone in his new role as prime minister, may be trying to refurbish his liberal credentials amid Russia's fast polarizing political landscape in hopes that he may have a political future if Putin should be forced to leave the Kremlin early.
"Medvedev can't change anything for Pussy Riot, but he's taking care to position himself as a liberal," says Alexei Mukhin, director of the independent Center for Political Information in Moscow.
"After all, he's a former president, head of the United Russia party, and if Putin were to go away he could step up. He's taking care with his biography, to show that he can take a stand."

Afghan security personnel investigate at the site of a suicide attack in Kabul, Sept. 18. A suicide bomber blew up a mini-bus carrying foreign and local contract workers near Kabul airport, with at least nine bodies lying near the wreckage, a Reuters witness at the scene said.
?
By NBC News staff and wire services
Updated at 5:28 a.m. ET: A suicide bomber attacked a minibus near Kabul airport in Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least nine people including eight foreign civilians working for an international aviation company, according to reports citing local officials.
Afghan militants claimed responsibility, saying the attack was carried out by a young female in retaliation for a film mocking the Prophet Muhammad.
Five of the victims were from South Africa, General Abdul Zahir, director of the local?Criminal Investigation Department, told NBC News.
Reuters reported that the eight foreign workers were a mixture of?South Africans and Russians working for international aviation company ACS. Unidentified?police sources put the total death toll higher than the local officials, saying 12 had died.
The attack underscored growing anger in Afghanistan over the film, which has enraged much of the Muslim world and led to the killing last week of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.
US-Afghan military operations suspended after attacks
Thousands of protesters clashed with police in the Afghan capital on Monday, burning cars and hurling rocks at security forces in the worst outbreak of demonstration-related violence since rioting in February over the inadvertent burning of Qurans by U.S. soldiers.
The death toll from the suicide attack was the highest on foreigners in the city since April 2011 when an Afghan air force pilot gunned down eight U.S. military flight instructors and an American civilian adviser after an argument at Kabul International Airport.
Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
Haroon Zarghoon, a spokesman for Hizb-i-Islami -- a?radical militant group that shares some of the Taliban's anti-foreigner, anti-government aims -- told the Associated Press that the attack was carried out by a 22-year-old woman named Fatima. However, the AP noted that?suicide bombings carried out by women are extremely rare in Afghanistan ? and few if any women drive cars.?
Another spokesman for the group,?Zubair Sediqqi, told Reuters:?"A woman wearing a suicide vest blew herself up in response to the anti-Islam video."
Zahir told NBC News there was no way of?confirming yet if the bomber was a male or female.
Reuters cited unidentified police sources saying the bomber was a woman, possibly?driving a Toyota Corolla car rigged with explosives, which she triggered.
?
Local photojournalist Massoud Hossaini who posted a picture of the blast scene on Twitter, said all the foreign bodies he saw were "without any uniform."
Protesters in Kabul and several other Asian cities have vented their fury over the film at the United States, blaming it for what they see as an attack on Islam. The outcry saddles U.S. President Barack Obama with an unexpected foreign policy headache as he campaigns for re-election in November. His administration has condemned the film as reprehensible and disgusting.
In response to the violence in Benghazi, Libya, where U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed, and elsewhere lastweek, the United States has sent ships, extra troops and specialforces to protect U.S. interests and citizens in the Middle East, while a number of its embassies have evacuated staff and are on high alert for trouble.
The identity of those directly responsible for the film remains unclear.
Clips posted online since July have been attributed to a man named Sam Bacile, which two people connected with the film have said was probably an alias.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, a Coptic Christian widely linked to the film in media reports, was questioned in California on Saturday by U.S. authorities investigating possible violations of his probation for a bank fraud conviction.
NBC News producer?Akbar Shinwari in Kabul,?Reuters and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bethesda, MD If you are overweight and pregnant, your baby isn't destined to a life of obesity after all, according to a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal. In the report, a team of U.S. scientists show that modifying fat intake during pregnancy to a moderate level is enough to benefit the child regardless of the mother's size. Specifically, they found that a protein called "SIRT1" rewrites a developing fetus' histone code, which affects his or her "epigenetic likelihood" of being overweight or obese throughout his or her lifetime.
"We are finding that the cycle of obesity likely begins in the womb, however, we are also finding that obesity does not necessarily beget obesity," said Kjersti M. Aagaard, M.D., Ph.D., study author from the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. "A diet laden with fat changes the molecular machinery which chemically modifies the structure of the developing infant's genetic material. These commonly called 'histone code' changes are rewritten-at least in part-by SIRT1, which in turn, alters key regulators of fat and glucose metabolism in the infant. It is our hope that these early steps will in turn break the cycle of obesity in the generations to come."
To make this discovery, Aagaard and colleagues used three groups of pregnant primates. The first group ate a healthy pregnancy diet (13 percent fat), while the second group ate a high fat diet (35 percent fat) and became obese. The third group was kept on a high fat diet for several years, became obese, and then was put on a healthy diet. Researchers were able to tease apart the effects on the infant of being exposed during pregnancy to a healthy diet versus an unhealthy high fat diet. The sirtuins and the proteins, and the genes regulating glucose and fat metabolism were analyzed. Results suggest that the livers of infants exposed to the high fat diet, showed less SIRT1 and less sirtuin activity than in the control group. However, infants exposed to a healthy pregnancy diet in both lean and obese groups had restored sirtuin. To prove that SIRT1 was specifically chemically modifying the histone code, scientists created a dead enzyme version. Using high level mass spectrometry, it was discovered that while the live enzyme version of SIRT1 was very good at chemically modifying histone proteins (specifically "deacetylating" histone protein H3) the dead version was not.
"What this study shows once again is that eating a healthy diet while pregnant holds true, regardless of your size or shape," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "Even if a woman isn't eating well before pregnancy, adopting good eating habits during pregnancy is still very good for the child and for her. This new report shows how diet affects offspring at the molecular level and points to new treatments for overweight people who were not fortunate enough to have mothers who ate well during pregnancy."

This new report shows how diet affects offspring at the molecular level and points to new treatments for overweight people who were not fortunate enough to have mothers who ate well during pregnancy."

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (Reuters) - Attorneys began making a case on Monday for why an Army doctor whose conviction for the murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters spawned several books and a television mini-series deserves a new trial 42 years after their deaths.
Jeffrey MacDonald, a former Green Beret whose crime prompted the bestseller "Fatal Vision," is serving three life sentences for the stabbing and clubbing deaths of his family members in their Fort Bragg, North Carolina, apartment in February 1970.
MacDonald, now 68, has long maintained his innocence and blamed a foursome of drug-crazed hippies for killing his wife, Colette, and daughters Kristen and Kimberley, ages 2 and 5. He described one of the intruders as a blonde woman in a floppy hat who he said chanted "acid is groovy; kill the pigs."
Courts have so far upheld his conviction, but MacDonald's lawyers are hoping for a different outcome as they present new evidence uncovered since his 1979 trial at a federal court hearing that could last up to 10 days in Wilmington.
Unlike in previous appeals, the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ordered in April 2011 that Senior District Judge James C. Fox must weigh the new evidence in light of all the other evidence previously gathered rather than considering it piecemeal.
The evidence includes a sworn statement by a now deceased former federal marshal alleging that the lead prosecutor in the case intimidated a key witness into changing her testimony, and DNA test results of hair found by the bodies that did not belong to Jeffrey MacDonald or any of his family members.
On Monday, defense attorney Gordon Widenhouse said the claim by former Deputy U.S. Marshal Jim Britt and the unsourced hair samples would "compellingly demonstrate reasonable doubt." If jurors had heard those facts at MacDonald's trial, they never would have convicted him, Widenhouse said.
Prosecutor John Bruce reserved his opening statement for when the prosecution presents its evidence.
MacDonald, gray-haired and shuffling into the courtroom with chains around his ankles, waved to his now-wife Kathryn whom he married while in prison.
Much of the day's testimony came from Wade Smith, a Raleigh attorney who was part of MacDonald's defense team in 1979. Smith testified that Britt came to him out of the blue in 2005 to share information the former marshal said had weighed on him since the trial.
Smith said Britt told him that Helena Stoeckley, thought by MacDonald's backers to be the woman in the floppy hat, had admitted to him to being in the MacDonald home on the night of the murders and even described a broken hobby horse she had seen inside.
Smith testified Britt also said he heard prosecutor James Blackburn tell Stoeckley that if she told jurors she was in the family's house on the night of the murders he would charge her with first-degree murder. During the trial, Stoeckley testified that she could not remember what she was doing that night and had no recollection of being in the house.
Under questioning by Bruce, Smith said he never personally heard Stoeckley confess to anything that was useful to the defense or prosecution.
"She was being totally uncooperative in every way," Smith said. "She wasn't giving us anything."
Neither Stoeckley nor Britt is alive to testify at MacDonald's latest hearing, having died in 1983 and 2008, respectively.
Britt's wife at the time of the trial, Mary Britt, testified on Monday that he also told her about Stoeckley's admission to being inside the MacDonald home.
Mary Britt said she remembered her then-husband's response when she asked about the outcome of Stoeckley's testimony. "He said they can't use her testimony because her brain is fried from the use of drugs," she said.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? Tulane safety Devon Walker fractured his spine in a head-to-head collision with a teammate during a game in Tulsa, the team doctor said Saturday.
Dr. Buddy Savoie said during a postgame news conference that Walker is in stable condition and will need spinal surgery in the "the next day or two."
"He was stable when we transported him," Savoie said. "I do not think, based on the information we have, his life was ever in danger."
Tulsa was leading 35-3 and facing a fourth-and-2 with the ball at the 33-yard line when the Golden Hurricane called timeout. Tulane then called timeout.
When play resumed, Tulsa quarterback Cody Green tossed a short pass to Willie Carter, who caught it at about the 28, and turned upfield. He was tackled around the 18-yard line, with defensive tackle Julius Warmsley and Walker sandwiching him and apparently smashing the crowns of their helmets into each other.
Medical personnel from both teams came out about 12:37 p.m. to attend to Walker as he lay on the field.
Savoie said after the game that Walker "actually never completely lost consciousness" and was breathing.
About 12:52 p.m., he was lifted onto a stretcher and loaded into a waiting ambulance about two minutes later. The ambulance drove off the field about 1 p.m.
FOX Sports reported a hush went over the crowd at H.A. Chapman Stadium as Walker was attended to on the field, and that several coaches were in tears. Spectators bowed their heads as someone on the field led the stadium in prayer.
The game resumed at 1:20 p.m.
Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology. His brother, Raynard, told The Associated Press that their mother was watching the game on television when her son was injured.
Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said after the 45-10 loss that while Walker was on the field, Johnson told Walker that he was praying for him and that help was on the way.
He said the mood among players was somber, and called the day his most difficult ever.
"Just seeing a young man, one of our family members, on the ground. It was just difficult for our guys," Johnson said in the postgame conference. "It's no excuse, but I don't know if they could have focused.
"It was tremendous that they finished the game, as I thought about just saying 'Hey look, let's not do anything else. Let's just get on the road and go.' "
