California MMA fighter to stand trial in slaying

(AP) ? A judge has ruled that a mixed-martial artist is mentally competent to stand trial on charges that he murdered and mutilated his friend in far Northern California.

The Eureka Times-Standard (http://bit.ly/KehC2C ) reports that a Del Norte County judge on Tuesday reinstated criminal proceedings against 27-year-old Jarrod Wyatt of Klamath.

Wyatt is charged with murder in the death of 21-year-old Taylor Powell on March 21, 2010. The defendant is accused of brutally beating and torturing Powell, including tearing off his face and ripping his still-beating heart from his chest.

Witnesses say the two had ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms and believed they were part of a struggle between God and the devil.

Wyatt pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to charges against him. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
