Human Powered Water Skis ? Fun Recreation ...

Common Career Misconceptions | TopDocInfoBlog.info

Water skiing is a very popular recreational sport, especially in the United States and Canada. There are many popular skiing devices. Sit-down type hydrofoil skiing device is one of the most widely used devices for skiing. Definitely, it is the most popular human powered water skiing device. Based on its shape, it can be called a skiing bicycle, with two skiing foils being attached in the place of wheels. It comes in many shapes and varieties. Normally the quality and the comfort of the device depend on the price of the equipment. Generally, the higher the price, the better will be the quality and resultantly the better will be the comfort.

Human powered water skis have a long and eventful history. Hydrofoils have been in use in many human controlled watercrafts such as boats, wakeboards, and skis for over a hundred years. Over the years, the design of the basic hydrofoil has undergone drastic changes before reaching its present comfortable and easy-to-use form. Enrico Forlanini, an Italian inventor, made the first hydrofoil in 1906. It was a crude form of the hydrofoils that are used today.

A new design of the device was introduced in the 1960s by Walter Woodward and Lucas Emmanuel. Their product, known as Dynaflite Hydrofoil, had attracted a large number of buyers at the beginning. But, soon the enthusiasm subsided. As a result, the product disappeared from the market. Another skiing experimenter cum surfer in Colorado, Mike Murphy, conducted various trial and error experiments with Dynamite Hydrofoil. He devised plans to improve the design and efficiency of the hydrofoil with the help of Henry Buxton. Their numerous experiments and endless redesigns paved the way for the development of human powered water skiing devices that we see now.

Murphy and Buxton should get the credit for developing the skiing devices with a chair where one can sit and continue skiing. The design they created has been undergoing continuous improvement as riders keep on making suitable changes to fit their particular needs. For example, some skiing enthusiasts polish the foils and remove the powder coating of the foils to improve the speed and overall performance of the device. Some riders also add winglets to the front wing to get more speed and lift from the water.

A number of brands of human powered water skis are available in the market today. One is likely to get a specialized skiing device for any special use or purpose. As one of the brands correctly puts in its ad copy, the production of skiing devices are limited only by the imagination of the skiing community. These devices come in various names such as hydro bikes, water cycles, pedal-powered boats, hydro slide, aqua skipper, and sea jogger.
