Distraught Taylor first Briton to exit boxing

It all ended in tears for lightweight Ross Taylor on Thursday as he became the first Briton to exit the Olympic boxing tournament in a defeat to Italy's Domenico Valentino.

The 21-year-old Scot was unable to find a solution against his vastly more experienced opponent, the 2009 world champion, losing 15-10 in their second round bout.

Taylor, though, was inconsolable after the fight.

"I'm obviously incredibly disappointed after all the hard work to reach here," Taylor said. "I just couldn't deliver the win this evening.

"I have really enjoyed the build-up and I am very grateful for all the support I have received and I will now reflect on what happened."

Taylor, a former British taekwondo champion, has no intention of turning professional yet.

"I intend to fight at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and go one better than I did at the 2010 ones in Delhi and that is to win gold."

Valentino for his part said that he had got a wake up call from his corner men going into the third and final round with just a one point advantage, 8-7.

"The coach said to me you are world number one not the guy in the opposite corner, so go out there and show him that you are," he said.

Canadian investing regulator raps RIM critic Alboini

TORONTO (Reuters) - A shareholder in Research In Motion who has been a vocal and persistent critic of the BlackBerry maker has been found by Canada's investment industry watchdog to have engaged in improper and risky trading.

In a decision released late on Monday, the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) said that between August and November 2008, investment bank Northern Securities Inc Chief Executive Victor Alboini "engaged in a trading practice which improperly obtained access to credit" for his client, Jaguar Financial Corp, of which Alboini is also president and CEO, and in doing so risked the capital of Northern.

IIROC found that two other Northern executives also broke the rules.

Alboini said he disagrees with the ruling.

"We will be appealing the decision of the panel. We have fundamental issues with the lack of fairness associated with the proceedings by IIROC," he told Reuters.

Alboini, who is a former securities lawyer, is a widely known critic of RIM, of which Jaguar is a shareholder.

Last year, he called for the company's co-chief executives to be replaced and demanded the appointment of an independent chairman, while also urging the company's board to consider selling the company or breaking it into three units.

IIROC also found that Frederick Vance, as chief compliance officer at Northern, failed to adequately supervise Alboini's trading activity involving Jaguar and other Northern clients.

As well, between 2006 to 2010, Alboini and Vance repeatedly failed to correct problems discovered in three business conduct compliance reviews and one trading conduct review.

Douglas Chornoboy, chief financial officer of Northern from February 2008 until 2009, filed or allowed the filing of inaccurate monthly financial reports that failed to account for "leasehold improvement costs, thereby misstating Northern's risk adjusted capital," IIROC said.

A penalty hearing is scheduled for October 11.

IIROC launched the investigation in April 2009. The hearing took place from May 7 to June 1, 2012.

Islesboro breast cancer survivor to appear on 'NY Med' reality show ...

When Andree Brown agreed to appear on a new reality show about life inside one of New York City?s top hospitals, she?d just learned she had breast cancer.

Brown, a summer resident of Islesboro, was being examined at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital when a filmmaker with ?NY Med,? an eight-part series by ABC News that debuted on July 10, asked to film her. At first, Brown, 57, told the woman with the camera to go away.

Then she reconsidered.

?I thought, is this about me or is this about women, and can I make a contribution by doing this?? Brown said.

The show, airing on Tuesdays throughout the summer, chronicles Brown?s fight against breast cancer following a routine mammogram and ultrasound that led to a mastectomy, chemotherapy and drug therapy. She will be featured in an episode airing at 10 p.m. Aug. 7.

Today, Brown?s feeling ?dynamite? after finishing treatment, enjoying her eighteenth summer on Isleboro, cooking and getting her tennis game back.

?I?m hoping that a woman who has just discovered that she has breast cancer can look at it and say, ?I?m going to have the same strength and I?m going to take care of myself? ? I feel like I made it into a really positive experience,? Brown said.

She credits top-notch care and catching the cancer early for her survival. Key to buoying her spirits throughout the ordeal was preserving most of her hair, made possible through a little-known therapy that cools the scalp during chemotherapy treatments, Brown said.

Three of her friends took turns sitting with Brown through her ?cold cap? sessions, changing the cap every half hour to keep it chilled. Chemotherapy is hard enough for women without the added stress of hair loss, she said, recalling the stories of mothers she met who told of scaring their young children when they took off their hot, itchy wigs.

?I think that?s the one point that could change somebody?s experience,? Brown said. ?If they had their hair, they?d have their dignity and their pride and also they wouldn?t be a red light to other people that they had cancer.?

Brown hopes to raise awareness about cold cap therapy, which some hospitals and oncologists don?t offer because of doubts about its efficacy or the inconvenience. Chemotherapy treatments take twice as long for patients using cold caps, and treatment centers also must install freezers.

?None of that to me is big enough to say no,? Brown said.

The reality show, which features celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz among the hospital?s top doctors, ultimately helped Brown to cope with her diagnosis. She?s become a much more open person, she said.

Brown plans to host a party to watch the Aug. 7 episode. Her son, James, will fly to Maine from San Francisco, where he attends college, to view it with her, and both will see his interview about his mother?s cancer battle for the first time.

Beating the disease came down to her outlook, Brown said. She walked four miles every day throughout her chemotherapy treatment even though all she wanted to do was sleep, she said.

?A lot of it is your attitude,? Brown said. ?It?s about how you are going to look at it.?

Regulator rejects government mortgage write-down plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top housing regulator rebuffed the offer of taxpayer funds to reduce mortgages held by struggling homeowners on Tuesday, a blow to the Obama administration which is keen to show voters it can help fix the housing market.

Calling it a challenging decision, the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said using funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program would not make a meaningful improvement in reducing foreclosures in a cost-effective way for taxpayers.

"The anticipated benefits do not outweigh the costs and risks," the Federal Housing Finance Agency's head Edward DeMarco told reporters.

The administration has been pressuring DeMarco to allow the government-controlled mortgage financing agencies to do more principal writedowns. But DeMarco has maintained that this would needlessly drive up the costs of their taxpayer bailout.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose government bailout has meant taxpayers have provided nearly $190 billion to keep them afloat, were seized by the government in 2008 amid threats of insolvency due to losses on subprime loans.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told DeMarco in a letter released to media he was concerned about the regulator's continued opposition and urged the acting director to reconsider his decision.

"I do not believe it is the best decision for the country," Geithner said.

The use of targeted principal reduction would "provide much needed help to a significant number of troubled homeowners, help repair the nation's housing market and result in a net benefit to taxpayers," he added.

The administration has struggled to revive the housing market, where 22 million homeowners are underwater or owe more than their properties are worth.

Although the regulator found that using the taxpayer bailout funds could result in about 74,000 to 248,000 borrowers being eligible for the mortgage reductions, it said "nearly all of this benefit is simply a transfer from taxpayers" to the government-controlled enterprises and would rack up taxpayers' tab.

Implementing the program "would actually increase taxpayer costs," DeMarco said in a letter to lawmakers announcing the decision.

After conducting a six-month study on whether to use the taxpayer funds, DeMarco's agency concluded that the program would not only be costly and time consuming to implement but that it could also send the wrong message to troubled borrowers and create incentives to strategically default in order to win a mortgage reduction from the government.

Fannie and Freddie, the two largest sources of housing money, were taken over by the government in September 2008 during the financial crisis.
