Can You Rent an Apartment in Atlanta With a Broken Lease, Bad ...

law_scale_background.jpg

Are you looking for an apartment in Dunwoody, Marietta, Avondale Estates, Doraville, Stone Mountain, Decatur or Kirkwood in the Atlanta area but have bad credit or a prior felony or misdemeanor conviction? Perhaps you?ve already tried and have faced frustrating denial. If this is your story, you are not alone. The National Apartment Association estimates that hundreds of families are turned away from apartments due to bad credit or a criminal conviction. If you are in the Atlanta area, and are looking for an apartment, this is a reality that you will face. But is there a way out? Let?s see.

How can I get approved for an apartment in Atlanta even with a broken lease and bad credit?

There are thousands of people looking for apartments in the Atlanta area every day and many of these people either have a poor credit rating or a prior felony conviction which makes it hard to secure an apartment. This can be quite a frustrating experience especially if one just came from a foreclosure and is looking for an apartment. There are also thousands of apartments in the Atlanta area that can rent to people with bad credit but many people do not know which ones they are. This is because apartments in Atlanta, notably Marietta, Kirkwood, Dunwoody, Doraville, Stone Mountain and other major Atlanta environs do not advertise that they are renting to people with bad credit or criminal felony or misdemeanor convictions.

Simple steps in leasing an apartment in Atlanta with bad credit, broken lease or a felony/misdemeanor in Atlanta

Many apartment leasing offices in Atlanta are in the habit of conducting routine credit checks and background checks on prospective tenants. Credit checks are done in accordance with the guidelines of the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) and the apartments may access data from either or all of the credit reporting agencies, tenants? rental history databases, court records and sex offender registries across the country. If you have bad credit or a criminal conviction you may be subject to what is known in apartment circles as adverse action. This typically refers to the action the apartment decides to take when a customer?s credit comes up short or the background check pulls up something negative. Adverse action may include outright denial or any of a number of other options depending on the particular apartment. These options may include hiking up the security deposit and rent or demanding three months of advance rent.

To avoid this, one has to take a series of steps.Unfortunately, not many tenants who face adverse action know what do do next.

Supplies to Stock the Craft Cupboard | FIMBY

?

One of the most common questions I get from readers is "how do I encourage my children to be creative?" One of the ways I've encouraged creativity in our home is by stocking the shelves with supplies. When I've mentioned this people want to know, "what supplies?"

This is my second post in a two part series answering that question.

bead bin

The first post on this topic (published ahem, over one year ago) Supplies for Creativity ~ Paper Crafts focused on just that - paper related craft supplies. Not just paper but all the artistic mediums you use on paper - markers, pencils, pens, crayons, paints, rubber stamps etc. That post also included the basic home office tools every home should have for encouraging creativity.

This follow up post is everything else we stock in our craft supplies. Fabrics, clay, wood, beads and all the rest. Anything that isn't flat and paper related. See this video post for how I organize all these craft supplies.

I'm pleased to introduce Artterro, the sponsor for this post. You can read more about this great company at the bottom, skip there right now if you want. There's a coupon code for you there that you'll want to check out.

Supply List Notes

In the list below I've marked the most basic items with an asterix (*). The remaining items are optional for the beginner.

Remember this is a post of what's in our home, not a theoretical supply list. I don't own every craft gizmo and gadget - hardly! What I recommend in this post are the tried and true supplies for the crafting my children like to do.

Which raises a good point. If you, or your child, are really into a particular art or craft, say glass blowing (this is getting kind of advanced) your craft supply list would necessarily look different than mine. I'm sticking with the basics, and a few steps beyond the basics, in this post.

organized beads

Beads & Bling

Beads * - When the kids were really little we used large plastic or wood beads. They've graduated now to the itty bitty seedbeads, larger glass beads, metal beads and everything in between. We always have more beads than seems necessary. Brienne loves collections and beads are one of her favorites.

Buttons * - Before kids craft with beads, they start with buttons. We have used buttons for so very many things.

Jewel stones & sequins * - These have decorated untold sword hilts and crowns. Kids love these pretties, I think they're a must have.

Sea glass or other glass pieces * - You can buy bags of these at the craft store or if you're lucky enough to live near the ocean you can collect it yourself like we enjoy doing.

what the bead drawer looks like, unorganized
what the bead drawer looks like, unorganized

Silk flowers & feathers * - You know those ugly fake flowers in the craft stores that leave you wondering, "what the heck would someone do with those?". Take them apart and to make flower fairies - that's what! Colored craft feathers have come in handy many times for "embellishment".

Animal eyes - One of my kids' favorites craft activities has been making stuffed animals. We use and adapt free online patterns (sorry I don't have any book recommendations for you).

Yarn, Wire & String

Yarn * - We downsized our yarn in the move but I still keep a variety of yarns for knitting and general crafting. Most of these are leftovers given to us from family and friends.?

Wool Rovings * - We use wool rovings for felting (admittedly I don't remember the last time we did felt craft) and crafting in general. When we lived in Maine I was lucky enough to live near a farm where I could buy these directly from the goat growers/fiber artists.

wool rovings

Pipe cleaner * - The kids have mostly moved beyond this now and into wire (see next point) but pipe cleaner is an easier wire for little kids to work with.

Wire * - Rolls and wrapped florist wire, which is sold in lengths. We have a couple different thicknesses of rolled wire and also some colored metal wire. We sometimes use these for beading and jewelry making but mostly the kids use wire for making toys. Critters, fairies & medieval folk have been some favorites.

String * - Of all sorts. Hemp, cotton and thicker twine for beading, general crafting and household use.

Elastic string * - We use these mostly for beading crafts. Colored ones are pretty and clear is especially good for nicer jewelry making projects.

Elastic bands * - These are used constantly for craft, science projects and household use. What did people do before elastic bands?

craft yarn

Fabric & Sewing Supplies

I'm keeping the following list simple, just the basics. Once a child (or yourself) gains more skill and experience and wants to sew more, you'll have a better idea, simply from using some tools already, what supplies you'll need.

Felt * - Hands down the best fabric to get kids started with sewing. My kids use felt all the time - to make toys, dolls, and doll clothes. Felt doesn't fray and takes a beating with hot glue. There is some really cheap felt that doesn't hold up as well. Thicker felts will hold stitches and not pill as easy. If you can only buy one thing to start, start with this.

Fleece * - Fleece is another go-to fabric for beginner sewists - children and adults alike. Again, not all fleece is created equal. The good thing is, any rinky-dinky craft or fabric store stocks fleece (and felt).

Socks and gloves * - We keep a bag of old socks and mismatched or worn-through-the-finger gloves for kids' crafting. Because there is already a shape to the fabric there is less sewing and it's easier for little hands to make their own "stuffies".

Wool sweaters & old clothes * - You don't want to keep too much of this stuff (it can get out of hand) and if you run out there is always second hand stores. Once again, there is "shape" already to the fabric (arms for example) and kids can get really creative with this. Wool sweaters are one of our favorites to craft and sew with.

quilt pieces

Stuffing * - Wool, cotton or poly. Your choice.

Embroidery floss * - As far as kid crafting goes I think this is almost more important than thread. It's so thick and easy to use. My kids use it for everything. We were lucky when Nana was downsizing her stash and passed it on to us.

Pins & Needles * - Sewing pins, safety pins, needles (including large ones for sewing with yarn and embroidery floss).

Thread & Ribbons * - For hand sewing and machine stitching. Ribbons for crafting in general.

Fabric * - What you need really depends on what you're doing. In addition to felt and fleece we have all sorts of fabrics. If your kids like needle craft you'll want some pieces of embroidery fabric also.

Sewing Machine - This is not necessary-necessary for beginners. But I've never not owned a machine, or not had one accessible to me through relatives, so I can't imagine living without a sewing machine. Mine isn't super-duper fancy so I've taught the kids on that machine from the time they were about five years old.

Wood, Plastic & Clay

Supplies for sculpting and building.

Craft sticks (aka Popsicle sticks) * - Where would the world be without popsicle sticks (& hot glue)? In the crafting dark ages I tell ya! Worth buying in bulk when you can, that way you don't have to ration the kids as much. What I love about crafting with wood is that when the toy or craft has lived it's useful life you can burn it - and we do! Burn old crafts all the time.

Bamboo skewers * - You can find these at the grocery store.

cardboard castle

Wood "head" beads * - Our kids use these specifically for making heads for their handmade miniatures. They are handy for other crafting also.

Wood clothespins - We've never owned the spring-less type that are used for making little dolls but many people love using these.

Miscellaneous wood pieces * - These could be craft store purchased but can also be household DIY project cast offs. We keep a bin of these (often have to downsize it because it could easily take over).

Re-purposed cardboard pieces * - Toilet paper and paper towel rolls, any and all cardboard boxes. We used to keep an actual stash, now we just raid the recycling box. The kids have made amazing toys with cardboard.

Balsa wood - This is an easy wood to learn to carve with, though Laurent practices carving with any wood he finds.

Carving tools - We own a set of real wood carving tools, kind of like this that Laurent purchased with birthday funds one year. Honestly, he hasn't used them that much. His Leatherman Micra Multitool gets more use and is so much more versatile (comes into the woods with us all the time). We also own an Xacto kit that we've had since before children and it has come in handy many times.

Perler beads * - The kids loved these when they were little. Someone gave them to us as a gift. Perler bead projects kept little hands occupied for many hours. Not as eco-friendly as fiber and wood crafts but bought me a few hours of sanity.

Shrinky Dinks * - Fridge magnets, jewelry pendants and window hangings are a few things we did with shrinky dinks. Like Perler beads, this activity kept my kids engaged for quite a long time, but parents have to help with the oven part. I had a friend in Maine who made beautiful jewelry from this material.

Play Dough * - Homemade or store bought. There is a dizzying array of sculpting dough available now. We always just used play dough but I don't stock it anymore since the kids have graduated to polymer clay.

Polymer clay - The kids use this mostly to sculpt miniatures toys. We use Fimo and also Sculpey. As C?line has gotten more skilled with this we've added extras like varnish and powders for creating life-like dollhouse miniatures.

Adhesives

The following is a list of essential adhesives for basic crafting.

  • Scotch, masking tape, duct, and clear packing tape
  • Stick glue and Elmers-type white glue. Mod Podge is not necessary, you can make your own if you want.
  • Glitter glue
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks - Our kids use the hot glue gun nearly every day. They have used this tool from the time they were preschoolers.

Vegetable & Mineral

I don't keep these in the craft cupboard, they are either accessible outdoors, in the garden supplies, or in the kitchen. These include items like sand, rocks, moss, dirt, cornstarch, and borax to name a few.

Basic Tools

  • knitting needles and crochet hooks - you can make your own knitting needles?and I recommend large crochet hooks for beginners, super easy to crochet a chain with thick yarn. See FIMBY's amazon bookstore for knitting and crochet instruction books as well as other kid craft books we own or have used.?
  • scissors (see the rest of my home office tool list in my first craft supplies post).
  • basic pliers - for cutting and bending wire
  • hammer and nails - for wood craft
  • old kitchen butter knives etc. that can be used for sculpting clay
  • clothes iron - for Perler beads and also sewing projects

~~~
As long as this list is I feel like I'm missing something. We're currently in Montr?al without craft supplies so I can't just go rummage through to check what we have. If I think of something later I'll add it.
Artterro
One of the craft projects we did bring with us this month was an Artterro Eco Friendly Art & Craft Kit.
Artterro kits are "all-in-one" craft kits. They have everything you need, except the most basic of tools, like scissors. They even have the needles.
But unlike a lot of other craft kits on the market Artterro has strong environmental and sustainability ethic. Their kits feature high-quality natural materials like 100% wool felt, 100% post-consumer waste decorative handmade paper, glass and wooden beads, cotton thread, hand batiked cotton fabric, and copper wire. (No plastic Perler beads I'm guessing).
Artterro sells a bunch of different kits with a lot of the craft supplies I've listed above - rovings, wire, beads, wood and felt pieces. As well as gorgeous papers and painting supplies.
These kits are great for gifts and travel (Brienne brought the art dolls kit with us this month). I think these kits are also genius for parents who are crafty challenged but want to get quality supplies and do-able instructions into their children's hands. The do-able instructions part is really important.
arterro crafting
If you'd like to try Artterro kits for yourself, or order some for gifts, Artterro has provided a coupon code for FIMBY readers, FIMBY20 for 20% off. That's a good deal! Code valid through till July 7th.
I know this is a long list and a long post. If you have anything you'd like to add (must have's for crafting), please leave a comment. And do go check out Artterro's Kits - they're lovely.
Easy Planning For Home Improvement - Juss Free Vector Art
Make your renovation plans, then stick to them. Contractors become gun-shy about doing work when the owner constantly changes and tweaks the plans. Even though a huge renovation project seems easier when you break it up, piece-mealing it slows things down because the only thing workers can depend on is the plans changing.
If you have a large, open kitchen, consider building or buying a movable kitchen island. An island can be covered with tile, granite, or marble tops, making it the perfect extra surface for preparing meals, serving food, finishing up homework, or as a makeshift mini-bar that goes wherever you need it to. Many models include storage features like drawers, hooks, and built-in cutting blocks.
If your home is heated with a wood-burning stove or fireplace, plant new trees in your yard every other season. This will help to compensate for the high carbon footprint you are leaving by burning natural resources and emitting smoke into the atmosphere. It will also give you a source for free firewood in future years, after the trees mature.
Copper pipe is the best choice for plumbing home improvements, if the money is available for it. While safe and effective plastic plumbing exists, it still falls far short of copper, in terms of durability and reliability. All plumbers are familiar with copper and have plenty of experience working on it. Copper will also match the existing plumbing of older houses being renovated.
Are you considering a home improvement project? Are you trying to decide whether to do the job yourself or hire it out? One thing to take in consideration is the time value of your efforts. What is the dollar value of the time that you would have put into this project, worth to you? Compare this dollar value to what it would cost to hire the work out.
Flooring can be a relatively simple home improvement project even for a novice. Focus on putting tile in your kitchen and bathrooms and replace your carpet with hardwood flooring. Home improvement stores have a wealth of information about how to make this process easy for you to complete.
Many companies now seal their new tools to keep them looking sleek for months on a display shelf. As a result, tools like hammers can be very slippery the first time you use them. To make a new hammer less slippery, sand the head before using it. Give any new tool better traction by rubbing the work surfaces with sandpaper or steel wool.
Install ceiling fans to circulate the air in your home. During summer the fan can be adjusted to blow down, and during the winter it can adjusted to draw the air up. This increases the efficiency of the utilities in your home so that you pay less in heating and cooling costs and save energy.
Make your bathroom or kitchen back-splash, sparkle with brand new tile. You can purchase the tiles relatively cheaply and do it yourself or hire a tile guy to do it for you, if you just do not feel like it. Either way, the end result will be clean, sharp and very attractive.
Before removing and replacing old wood floors attempt to refinish them first. In many cases, the original wood flooring of your home has a great deal more value than if you were to replace it. At the same time, many wood floors can be refinished and look as new as ever with less cost than replacing the wood floors altogether.
Older awnings over porches and windows can greatly detract from the appearance of your home. By removing them, you are updating your house with a more modern look that allows its distinctive character to shine through. Furthermore, you will find that more natural light enters your house through the windows, brightening the mood.
A great way to add ambience to a room is by lighting a candle. Candles are a romantic gesture in any setting, but also give off a warm glow providing a room with the feeling of warmth and coziness. If your candle is scented, it also gives off a nice scent in the room while making you feel relaxed.
If you take on the task of staining your deck yourself be sure to protect yourself. Stains are full of harsh chemicals so it is a good idea to wear eye protection, rubber gloves, long sleeved shirts and pants that cover your legs, and shoes that will protect your feet.
If space is at a premium in your home, consider remodeling the attic or basement. These often overlooked spaces can be a cost-effective way to gain more square footage in your home, without resorting to a costly extension. If the area is already partially finished, your project will progress quickly, and you?ll be enjoying your new space in no time.
Before deciding on how to improve your home, review these tips, and choose the best options for your home, your budget, your family and your situation. Save time, save money and save effort by knowing ahead of time what to avoid and what to strive for when updating your home.
Facebook?s Hidden ?Like? Isn?t Just Good For Mobile Developers, It?s Good For Facebook
facebook-hidden-like-1Last week's announcement from Facebook about the new ability for app developers to integrate a hidden, built-in "Like" button in their mobile applications seemed to fly under the radar. Not that it wasn't duly covered by tech press: it was. But the deeper implications seemed to have been summed up under the banner of "this is great news for app developers"-type sentiment. It is, of course. App developers who smartly leverage Facebook integration can achieve impressive growth, even if it's a bit manufactured at times. But more importantly, the move is great for Facebook. It has managed to introduce a toolkit that allows developers to weave Facebook's data collection capabilities deep into the fabric of the future Internet - that is, the world of mobile apps.
Why You Should Love Grasshopper Tacos and Kelp Pasta
Many insects are what you might call superfood?rich in protein, low in fat and cholesterol, high in essential vitamins and minerals like calcium and iron. More important, insects are green super-foods. Bugs are cold-blooded (they don?t waste energy to stay warm), so they?re far more efficient at converting feed to meat than cattle or pigs. Ten grams of feed produces one gram of beef or three grams of pork, but it can yield nine grams of edible insect meat, according research from Arnold van Huis, an entomologist at Wageningen University. Yet insects still have virtually the same amount of protein as beef or pork. A 100-gram portion of grasshopper meat contains 20.6 grams of protein, just 7 grams less than an equivalent portion of beef.
The cutbacks come amid allegations of fraud by the Lahore-based theater group that produces the children?s show, the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, but it also comes at a time when the US-Pakistani relationship is strained, and when the US government is cutting back dramatically on foreign aid worldwide.
USAID allocated $20 million for the production of Sim Sim Hamara (which means ?Our Street? in Urdu), and $6.7 million of that was used to produce the first season, which premiered in 2011. The remainder of the contract has been terminated, pending the results of an investigation into the fraud charges.
"We did launch an investigation into the allegations. We also sent the theater workshop a letter that terminates the project agreement," US State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing in Washington on June 5. "No one is questioning, obviously, the value and positive impact of this kind of programming for children. But this is about allegations of corruption."
Faizaan Peerzada, Rafi Peer?s chief operating officer, denied the fraud charges, saying in a statement, ?Rafi Peer is proud of its association with the project and the quality of children?s educational television programming created within Pakistan as a result.?
Whatever the ultimate result of the investigation, the shutdown of funds into children?s broadcasting in Pakistan come at an unfortunate time in the US-Pakistani relationship.
NATO airstrikes and US special forces raids on Pakistani territory have strained Pakistani patience with the US-led war on terror, and Pakistan has shut off NATO?s use of Pakistani roads and ports to resupply its troops in Afghanistan. The US, meanwhile, has grown increasingly frustrated with what it sees as signs of either Pakistani collusion with militant groups such as the Taliban, or incompetence in bringing them under control.
Breaking Bad News
Dr. Heiko Jessen, at his family practice in Berlin
Dr. Heiko Jessen, at his family practice in Berlin
In an exam room in his modern clinic in Berlin, Dr. Heiko Jessen takes his patient?s hand; ?I don?t have good news for you? he begins, giving what he calls a warning shot before delivering the bad news. He looks into the young man?s eyes, ?Your HIV test came back positive.? The patient, Joseph, a twenty-three year old American living in Germany, asks a few questions and then breaks down in tears. Jessen rubs his back, his quiet embrace giving him space for the larger emotional release.
The doctor patient relationship is a unique one, a precarious balance of trust and influence. Physicians must ultimately find a compassionate way to give their patients difficult news. Yet, this is not so easy. A study published in February found that physicians struggle with honesty, with over half admitting that they?ve been inappropriately optimistic when diagnosing their patients. Physicians have difficulty giving their patients the open, honest dialogue they need.
To address this, medical schools are adding courses in patient communication. Two decades ago, only a minority of schools taught communication skills, today, almost all of them do, including mock-patient workshops, where students can directly test their ability to talk with patients about complicated issues. One of the first of these courses was at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. This course, termed ?breaking bad news,? started in 2000 as a tiny group of only six students practicing role-playing. A decade later, the course has become a mandatory part of the curriculum and a model for physician communication classes worldwide.
Jessen, who has wide experience in giving poor diagnoses, has been part of the ?breaking bad news? course since the beginning. He teaches an especially popular session, where he brings in patients with whom he has had to make particularly difficult diagnoses, allowing students to directly speak to the patient. These conversations get to the heart of which parts of the diagnosis are most difficult for patients and what communication tactics are ultimately effective.
This evening, Jessen has brought Joseph, the young American man he diagnosed as HIV positive, seven years earlier. The setting is intimate, ten students gather about Jessen and his patient. The atmosphere is casual as Joseph begins to tell his story, the students gradually warming up, asking questions. Jessen is there to direct the course but mostly he lets the patient speak, preferring the informal nature of the session. To his surprise, Joseph becomes emotional. Although it has been almost a decade since his diagnosis, the patient begins to break down in front of the class, tears mixing into his difficult story and his memory of what it was like to be told he was HIV positive.
He met Jessen when he was just twenty years old at a club in Berlin. Like many of Jessen?s patients, their relationship encompasses trust and friendship, a bond that makes the difficult business of breaking bad news easier for the patient. In fact, Jessen argues that getting a difficult diagnosis is far easier from a family doctor, a person who has built a relationship with their patient and will be there for the long run, rather than a specialist.
Studies indicate that empathy plays a significant role in the clinical outcome for patients, further underlining the importance of the patient-doctor relationship. Physicians have a connection with their patients unlike any other profession. Doctors touch their patients, both physically laying hands on their heart and head, but also emotionally, representing a safe place to speak about hidden fears. A poor diagnosis involves intricate communication skills: the ability to explain as well as listen, to lead the patient into complex decision-making, and to involve those people the patient is closest to. Predictably, physicians trained in these communication skills are far less likely to suffer from ?burn-out? and psychiatric distress.
As Joseph speaks to the medical students he realizes that he has not entirely accepted his own difficult diagnosis. Despite the support and resources he?s received, the difficulty of his disease still weighs on him. Bad news may forever change the doctor-patient relationship but, at its core, giving patients the honesty and empathy they need is as critical to a diagnosis as any PCR test.
Cries of cover-up in possible vote on attorney general
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In the classic Washington investigation at the highest levels of power, it is never the original offense that leads to trouble. It is who knew what and who said what that powers the probe and brings forth the cry of cover-up.
That script is being followed almost to the letter in the drama that continues this week as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives prepares for a possible vote on contempt of Congress charges against the highest law enforcement official in the country, Attorney General Eric Holder.
It began as a congressional probe of Operation "Fast and Furious," a botched effort by the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to trace illegal gun trafficking to Mexican drug cartels.
But now it is about a letter from the Justice Department to members of Congress dated February 4, 2011 denying the operation's existence.
The denial was vehement but, it turned out, inaccurate, as the department conceded when it formally withdrew the letter on December 11, 2011.
The Justice Department "obstructed the investigation" for nearly a year, said Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. What the committee now wants to know is how and when officials knew the February 4 letter was wrong and why it took so long for them to retract it.
The subpoena the committee issued last week was largely for post-February 4 documents that might shed light on those questions. The claim of executive privilege invoked by President Barack Obama at the request of his attorney general covers those very same papers.
Holder says he has turned over thousands of pages pertaining to the Fast and Furious operation, but deliberations among officials after February 4 are off limits.
The contempt vote could be avoided or postponed if Holder relents, Republicans on the committee say.
For all the script's familiarity, the conflict is potentially explosive for both sides.
If high-ranking officials in the Justice Department are shown to have knowingly misinformed Congress or to have held back information central to the probe, they could be forced to resign or even be prosecuted
If the Republicans come up empty-handed, they will be subject to accusations that at a time of economic distress and gridlock on critical issues, they burned up time and energy in partisan pursuit of the president.
Either way, it is a scandal in a presidential election year.
What makes matters worse for the Justice Department is that it did not come forward on its own to withdraw the February 4 letter.
Even as former Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich wrote that letter, congressional investigators were hearing from whistleblowers that the assertion was false and that guns bought with ATF investigators watching were being allowed to "walk" to the border and beyond.
OBSTRUCTION OR FISHING EXPEDITION?
"If there was obstruction (of a congressional investigation), we want to know about it," said a Senate Republican aide who asked not to be identified
Democrats accused Republicans of going on a "fishing expedition" in trying to gain access to documents that have nothing to do with the conduct of operation Fast and Furious.
In invoking executive privilege over those documents, the administration argues that it is protecting confidential conversations that any administration needs to function.
The administration notes it provided Congress with several thousand pages of documents and other information that give lawmakers a full picture of why the misleading February 4 letter was produced and what went wrong in the ill-fated border operation - one that appears to have contributed to the death of a federal law enforcement agent.
The blame, those documents suggest, is with a federal prosecutor's office in Arizona and law enforcement agents there who conceived and directed Fast and Furious. High-level Justice officials say they relied on them for the information that led to the erroneous February 4, 2011 letter.
"False," Weich wrote in that February letter of Grassley's contention just days earlier that the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sanctioned the sale of hundreds of assault weapons to "straw purchasers" of guns. Those front men, Grassley argued, transported the weapons into Mexico, where U.S. officials lost track of them as they fell into the hands of violent, gun-toting drug cartels.
On May 2, 2011, Weich wrote Grassley again, telling him that Operation Fast and Furious did not knowingly permit straw buyers to "walk" guns into Mexico.
In an administration swipe at Grassley, Weich also admonished the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee that only the chairman, a Democrat, was authorized to make inquiries.
But three days later, as anger was growing over revelations that one of the Fast and Furious guns had been found at the scene of U.S. Border patrol agent Brian Terry's murder in late 2010, the Justice Department began to back-pedal amid press reports about what whistleblowers were telling congressional investigators.
The Justice Department's position eroded further in June, 2011, when Weich testified to Congress that there were "serious questions about how ATF conducted this operation." Furthermore, he said, "We're not clinging to the statements" in the February 4 letter.
But it would take the Justice Department until December to formally withdraw the February 4 letter. On December 2, 2011, Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole informed Issa and Grassley that "facts have come to light during the course of this investigation that indicate that the February 4 letter contains inaccuracies."
POLITICALLY CHARGED ATMOSPHERE
Partisanship already was running high between the White House and Republicans in Congress over issues ranging from government spending to healthcare reform. If there was any question about the tailspin of inter-party relations at the dawn of the small-government Tea Party era, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell declared late in 2010 that his main mission was to help defeat Obama.
And so the Justice Department's complete reversal on Fast and Furious only stoked Republican suspicions of a cover-up.
Conservative bloggers and others suggested it was part of an administration back-door effort to impose new regulations on the sale of assault rifles and other "long-guns" - a contention that Democrats dismiss.
Indeed, the National Rifle Association in a statement supporting the vote to hold Holder in contempt of Congress accused the White House of using the Fast and Furious program to advance its gun control agenda.
The Republican leadership has worried that the Fast and Furious controversy could detract from election-year efforts to focus public attention on the ailing U.S. economy, and holding Obama responsible for it.
But Issa is aggressive and partisan. Last July 4, as downtown Washington was filling with tourists coming to see a nighttime fireworks display celebrating America's 235th birthday, Issa convened a private session in a Capitol Hill office to get testimony from ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson.
That interview focused on wiretap requests ATF had sought for the straw purchasers and investigative reports related to Fast and Furious.
In it, Melson testified that he had discovered in March that ATF agents had been instructed to allow the guns to "walk" - meaning to flow unfettered, even if they went into Mexico. Investigators say Melson passed that information along to Justice officials. They want to know how far up the chain of command Melson's information went.
The White House executive privilege claim has put all post-February 4, 2011 documents off limits. Republicans argue they need those emails and other correspondence to corroborate Melson's testimony and determine who at Justice saw them.
Some also note that Holder was willing to turn over some "deliberative" documents before the committee resorted to a subpoena.
In a hearing before Issa's committee on February 2, 2012, Holder said the department had made "wholesale deliberative material available" on the February 4th letter. "I am not sure I know any Attorney General who has ever done that before to that degree, and I thought it was the appropriate thing, given the inaccuracies that were contained in that letter."
Democrats complain that Issa has shifted his focus from investigating how Fast and Furious went wrong to a look into how the Justice Department has communicated with Congress.
"The only reason they want these post February 4 documents is because they (Republicans) haven't gotten dirt on anyone at main Justice or the White House," a House Democratic aide said.
At the same time, Democrats argue, Issa and his fellow Republicans are turning a blind eye toward a similar "gun walking" operation that took place during the George W. Bush administration.
In its report accompanying the contempt resolution, Issa's panel said it wants to know who had information about and approved the tactics in Fast and Furious and whether high-level Obama appointees were involved.
"Documents that whistleblowers have provided to the committee indicate that those officials were the senior officials in the Justice Criminal Division, (Assistant Attorney General) Lanny Breuer and one of his top deputies, Jason Weinstein," the panel's report said.
Among the details Republicans think they might learn by looking at the post-February 4 documents are how much Breuer or Weinstein knew about Fast and Furious when they approved wiretaps of straw purchasers' telephones - or whether they failed to adequately read relevant documents before signing the wiretap applications.
That is another problem for officials at the Justice Department. Technically, at least, ranking department officials are by law supposed to review any wiretap requests. If they did not, they can be portrayed as careless stewards of the law, or worse. If they did, and if the requests included details of the operation, they have even more serious explaining ahead of them.
Democrats counter that any high-level Justice Department officials who may have approved those wiretaps used the same accepted procedures that other administrations have long employed. At that high level, they say, the details of a law enforcement operation are not being reviewed. That is the responsibility of officials on the scene.
Not one to be deterred, she ditched the idea of finding a comfortable suit and decided to swim topless instead.
But before that, when she found the tell-tale lump in her right breast, a photo of a?breast cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy ultimately led her to the decision to have both of her breasts removed:??It?s such a powerful image. She?s so healthy and fit. It showed me I could be in shape again. I could be happy again,? she said, citing the feeling of empowerment it gave her to undergo the mastectomy in lieu of removing the lump and waiting for the cancer to possibly resurface. Read more ?
Hamilton agrees to make movie about his life
Associated Press Sports
updated 10:43 p.m. ET June 22, 2012
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton and his wife, Katie, confirmed Friday they have agreed to the creation of a feature film about his life.
In a statement released before the Rangers' game against the Colorado Rockies, the Hamiltons said they were approached by actor/director Casey Affleck and Thunder Road Pictures.
"While they are not involved with the actual Hollywood pitching process," the statement read, "the Hamiltons will be an integral part of the film's creative direction and accuracy as the project develops."
Tampa Bay selected Hamilton with the No. 1 overall pick in 1999 before his career was knocked off track by drug and alcohol abuse. After going on the disabled list in 2001 while in the minors, he became addicted to alcohol and cocaine. He didn't play from 2003-05.
Hamilton finally made it to the majors in 2007 with the Cincinnati Reds and was traded to Texas before 2008, the season he led the AL with 130 RBIs.
Hamilton won the 2010 AL MVP and has helped the Rangers make consecutive World Series appearances. He is hitting .331 this season with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs, including a four-homer and eight-RBI performance on May 8 against the Baltimore Orioles.
Boehner takes hard line on Holder contempt vote
WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner demanded Thursday that the Obama administration give in and turn over documents related to a botched gun-tracking operation, insisting that's the only way to stop a House vote to hold the attorney general in contempt.
Boehner took a hard line against the Obama administration and Attorney General Eric Holder despite a willingness by House Republicans and Holder to negotiate a settlement before the matter becomes a constitutional crisis. The president has invoked executive privilege, a legal principle used to avoid disclosure of internal presidential documents.
While a confrontation between the legislative and executive branches of government would be an academic dispute to most voters, Boehner on Thursday injected a human element into the battle over documents related to Operation Fast and Furious. He said the family of slain border agent Brian Terry deserved answers about the guns that killed him.
Two guns that were allowed to "walk" from Arizona to Mexico in the failed effort to track weapons were found near Terry after he was killed.
"The Terry family deserves answers about why their son was killed as a result of an operation run by the United States government," Boehner told his weekly news conference.
During the year and a half investigation by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the Justice Department turned over 7,600 documents about details of Operation Fast and Furious. But because the department initially denied and then admitted it used a risky investigative technique known as "gun-walking," the committee has turned its attention to how the department responded to the investigation. The additional documents it seeks are about that topic.
Agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona abandoned the agency's usual practice of intercepting all weapons they believed to be illicitly purchased. Instead, the goal of gun-walking was to track such weapons to high-level arms traffickers who had long eluded prosecution and to dismantle their networks.
Gun-walking has long been barred by Justice Department policy, but federal agents in Arizona experimented with it in at least two investigations during the George W. Bush administration before Fast and Furious. These experiments came as the department was under widespread criticism that the old policy of arresting every suspected low-level "straw purchaser" was still allowing tens of thousands of guns to reach Mexico. A straw purchaser is an illicit buyer of guns for others.
The agents in Arizona lost track of several hundred weapons in Operation Fast and Furious.
Boehner renewed his allegation that President Barack Obama's decision to assert executive privilege to withhold the documents "is an admission the White House officials were involved in the decision that misled the Congress and covered up the truth." In fact, historically, several presidents have invoked executive privilege over Cabinet department documents that did not directly involve White House officials.
In an election year, each party leveled charges against the other.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., accused Republicans of pursuing Holder to retaliate against his effort to stop suppression of voters in the upcoming elections. "I'm telling you, this is connected," she told reporters.
In an effort to back up her assertion, Pelosi's office emailed Democratic reports from 2007, when the party accused Republicans of an ongoing effort to deprive people of the right to vote.
Meanwhile, the liberal People for the American Way distributed a video in which Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., suggested a motive for the Obama administration's initial support of the gun-walking fiasco.
"Could it be that what they really were thinking of was in fact to use this walking of guns in order to promote an assault weapons ban?" said Issa, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
"Many think so. And they haven't come up with an explanation that would cause any of us not to agree," Issa said.
Issa commented in an interview during the National Rifle Association convention in April.
His spokesman, Frederick Hill, said, "Emails from officials who worked on Fast and Furious clearly show that they wanted to use aspects of the operation to justify new restrictions on gun sales." Hill provided several documents on the subject from Fast and Furious officials.
Holder, in Copenhagen, Denmark, for meetings with European Union officials, said Thursday the administration had given the committee a proposal to negotiate an end to the conflict.
"I think the possibility still exists that it can happen in that way," Holder said. "The proposal that we have made is still there. The House, I think, the House leadership, has to consider now what they will do, so we'll see how it works out."
But he called the contempt vote "unwarranted, unnecessary and unprecedented."
White House press secretary Jay Carney said there was "absolutely" no cover-up on the Fast and Furious controversy. He said executive privilege was asserted only on internal deliberations and "that is separate from trying to find out the truth about this operation."
Democrats contended that a 23-17 party-line contempt vote in the House Oversight committee Wednesday was just political theater.
On Tuesday, Holder offered to give lawmakers a briefing on the withheld documents but insisted that this action satisfy Issa's subpoena for the records and negate the need for a contempt vote.
Boehner on Thursday rejected Holder's approach.
"The negotiation that was proposed by the attorney general is, we should accept some documents of his choosing and, as a result of him turning over some documents of his choosing, that we would never ever pursue contempt," Boehner said. "Now this is not hardly a rational basis for a negotiation, nor is it a reasonable attempt at turning over the documents we've been asking for."
James wins 1st NBA title as Heat top Thunder
Miami, FL (Sportsbooks) - LeBron James fist-bumped with his teammates and coaches. He hugged others, then watched the last three minutes from the bench, jumping up and down near the end with a smile that stretched ear-to-ear.
The poster boy for unrealized expectations finally has his first championship.
"It's about damn time," he said.
James scored 26 points and had a triple-double Thursday night and the Miami Heat rolled to a 121-106 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
James and the Heat overcame two years of pressure as the presumptive favorite to win the title in a lockout-shortened season, using a defining 19-1 run in the third quarter to all but put the game out of reach.
James, too, has his defining moment.
After taking so much criticism -- for "The Decision," for playing nearly a decade without winning a championship as one of the most heralded talents in sports history -- James played the role of hero in Game 4 despite battling cramps, and he kept his foot on the pedal all the way through Game 5.
But the Heat won as a team Thursday more than any other time in the playoffs, hitting 14 3-pointers to tie a Finals record, including seven by veteran bench player Mike Miller.
James had 13 assists and 11 rebounds and was a unanimous choice for Finals MVP to no one's surprise. Chris Bosh added 24 points and Dwyane Wade scored 20 as Miami won its fourth game in a row to seal the deal.
"So gratifying," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
James is finally a champion after nine NBA seasons, including seven with the Cleveland Cavaliers before announcing in an ESPN special that he was "going to take my talents to South Beach" to play for the Heat.
He also famously said Miami would win "not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven" titles during a celebration thrown by the Heat after he and Bosh signed with the team that was criticized for being premature, if not wildly gaudy.
Now comes the real thing.
"Is it OK to have a party tonight!" Heat president Pat Riley called out during the on-court celebration at American Airlines Arena.
The Heat knocked off New York in five games, won three in a row to beat Indiana in six and survived Game 7 against battle-tested Boston to reach the Finals for the second year in a row.
They captured the title on their home court to avoid going back on the road for what could have been two more games in Oklahoma City, doing it largely with their big run in the third quarter.
Indeed, just as quickly as the Thunder seemed to wrest the momentum from Miami with an 18-6 burst spanning halftime, cutting a 17-point deficit to five, the Heat took it right back.
During the 19-1 run, Derek Fisher was called for a flagrant foul for doing little more than getting in the way to stop James on a fastbreak. James made the foul shots, Wade added a free throw after being fouled on an alley-oop attempt and the Heat pulled away.
Fittingly, the run was capped by back-to-back 3s from Bosh and Miller on the left side, pushing Miami's lead to 88-63. It was 95-71 going into the fourth and Miller knocked down two more 3s barely a minute into the last quarter to keep the rout moving along.
"It's everything (I imagined) and more," James said more than an hour after the game was over as he sat wearing a championship T-shirt and hat and sitting between his two newest trophies. "My dream has become a reality now."
The Thunder, since moving from Seattle in 2008, have spent the last several years as young and talented up-and-comers nipping at the heels of the West's old-money teams until showing them there was a new boss in the conference.
They swept the reigning-champion Mavericks, lost one game to Kobe Bryant and the Lakers and beat the Spurs four times in the conference finals after San Antonio had won 20 in a row, including two against the Thunder.
But they couldn't get past their final hurdle.
"We ran into a team that was tough to beat," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "Unfortunately we didn't reach our goal of winning a championship but we put in a good effort."
With a core of Kevin Durant, the three-time reigning NBA scoring champion, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, the Thunder can surely make it back to the Finals. It might not even be the last time the teams meet for the title.
Durant poured in 32 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Oklahoma City while Westbrook and Harden both scored 19.
"It hurts, man. We're all brothers on this team and it just hurts to go out like this," said Durant. "We made it to the Finals, which is cool for us, but we didn't just want to make it."
Said Westbrook: "We have to remember this feeling."
The Heat improved to 2-1 in the NBA Finals and were the first champion to come out of the East since Boston in 2008. They lost three games in a row to Dallas last year after taking a 2-1 lead in the series. The Heat won a title with Wade and Shaquille O'Neal in 2006 after coming back from a 2-0 hole against the Mavs.
Opinions about James are almost certain to change -- from critics as well as defenders. Last year, he and Wade were criticized for mocking Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki's illness in the finals with fake coughs captured on video after a shootaround.
This year, James stepped up to make the go-ahead 3 late in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's Game 4 despite going out with cramps in his legs minutes earlier that left him unable to walk off the court under his own power.
"We expected it to be a little easier. But we had to go through what we went through last year," admitted Wade, who said he watched Dallas' clinching Game 6 win from last year on Wednesday night and realized it was the Mavs' time to win.
"Tonight," he said, "it was our time."
James' teams are 1-2 in the NBA Finals (the Cavs were swept by San Antonio in 2007) but all the talk of him not living up to his potential was probably a little premature. It took him just two more seasons than Michael Jordan to win his first ring, and James is a year younger at 27.
When James captured his third MVP award last month, it was noted that he was the only one among the eight players with at least that many who had never won a title. Now that distinction is gone, too.
"I'm not one for giving guys credit during the series, but it's over. That guy is an incredible player," said Durant.
Miller went 4-for-4 on 3s in the first half, hitting the last one near the end of a 19-4 run in the second quarter. James capped it with a layup in transition to give the Heat a 17-point lead at 53-36. The Thunder, behind Durant, ended the half on a 13-6 run to get within 59-49 at halftime.
Earlier, James, Wade and Bosh scored 13 straight Heat points and the team made nine shots in a row, taking a 28-19 lead on Miller's back-to-back 3s in the first quarter.
Norris Cole hit a 3 for Miami moments later, but Durant's soaring one-handed baseline dunk over Udonis Haslem pulled the Thunder within 31-26 going into the second.
"They just took it to us," said Brooks. "They beat us. They beat us fair and square. They were the better team."
James said during the on-court celebration that nothing bothered him more than the perception he was a selfish player only out to do what's best for himself.
He stood, his shoulders a little lighter, clutching the MVP trophy named for Bill Russell, the 11-time champion who wasn't but a few feet away.
"This right here is the happiest day of my life. And I wouldn't want to spend it with anyone else in the world but my teammates and these fans," said James. "This is a dream come true."
